## What it does

The skill fires when you ask an agent to design PostgreSQL tables, a schema or a data model, pick data types, constraints or indexes. Inside is a rule set: primary keys as `BIGINT GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY`, normalization to 3NF, `NOT NULL` where it is semantically required, and indexes for the access paths you actually query.

A separate section covers PostgreSQL gotchas. Foreign key columns are not indexed automatically, so you add that index yourself. `UNIQUE` allows multiple NULLs unless you write `NULLS NOT DISTINCT`. Length and precision overflows raise an error instead of truncating silently. Gaps in identity sequences are expected, so don't try to close them.

Data types get their own walkthrough: `TIMESTAMPTZ` over `TIMESTAMP`, `NUMERIC` for money, `TEXT` instead of `VARCHAR(n)`, `JSONB` with a GIN index, arrays, ranges, network types, full-text search. There is also a list of types to avoid. The rules are general, so treat the output as a starting point and check the query plan against your own data.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill design-postgres-tables -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-postgres-tables/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-postgres-tables/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill design-postgres-tables -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-postgres-tables/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill design-postgres-tables -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-postgres-tables/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install timescale/pg-aiguide design-postgres-tables
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-postgres-tables/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill design-postgres-tables -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/timescale/pg-aiguide --path skills/design-postgres-tables
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-postgres-tables/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add timescale/pg-aiguide --skill design-postgres-tables -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- pick a column type for money, time or strings without surprises
- add the index on a foreign key column that PostgreSQL skipped
- decide when to normalize a table and when denormalizing pays off
- design a JSONB schema with a GIN index for nested field lookups
- get constraints and NULL handling right in UNIQUE definitions

## Example prompts
- Design users and orders tables for PostgreSQL: types, keys, indexes
- Add an index on the foreign key column in the orders table
- Review my schema: where is denormalization unnecessary and which indexes are redundant

# PostgreSQL Table Design

## Core Rules

- Define a **PRIMARY KEY** for reference tables (users, orders, etc.). Not always needed for time-series/event/log data. When used, prefer `BIGINT GENERATED ALWAYS AS IDENTITY`; use `UUID` only when global uniqueness/opacity is needed.
- **Normalize first (to 3NF)** to eliminate data redundancy and update anomalies; denormalize **only** for measured, high-ROI reads where join performance is proven problematic. Premature denormalization creates maintenance burden.
- Add **NOT NULL** everywhere it’s semantically required; use **DEFAULT**s for common values.
- Create **indexes for access paths you actually query**: PK/unique (auto), **FK columns (manual!)**, frequent filters/sorts, and join keys.
- Prefer **TIMESTAMPTZ** for event time; **NUMERIC** for money; **TEXT** for strings; **BIGINT** for integer values, **DOUBLE PRECISION** for floats (or `NUMERIC` for exact decimal arithmetic).

## PostgreSQL “Gotchas”

- **Identifiers**: unquoted → lowercased. Avoid quoted/mixed-case names. Convention: use `snake_case` for table/column names.
- **Unique + NULLs**: UNIQUE allows multiple NULLs. Use `UNIQUE (...) NULLS NOT DISTINCT` (PG15+) to restrict to one NULL.
- **FK indexes**: PostgreSQL **does not** auto-index FK columns. Add them.
- **No silent coercions**: length/precision overflows error out (no truncation). Example: inserting 999 into `NUMERIC(2,0)` fails with error, unlike some databases that silently truncate or round.
