# design-loop

The skill runs a baton-passing loop: it reads a task from a file, generates an HTML/Tailwind page, wires it into the site, then writes the next task.

## What it does

The baton is `.design/next-prompt.md`. It holds the current task: page name, layout and the prompt body. Each cycle the skill reads it, generates the page, integrates it into the site structure (navigation, links), verifies it visually through browser automation when that is available, updates the site docs, and writes the next task so the loop keeps running.

Generation has two backends. Claude is the default and needs no dependencies — you get production-ready HTML/Tailwind. Google Stitch is the other: `npm install @google/stitch-sdk` plus `STITCH_API_KEY` in the environment or `.dev.vars`. The skill checks for the SDK, the key and `.design/metadata.json` with a project ID, and falls back to Claude if any of them is missing. With Stitch, the project ID is persisted in `.design/metadata.json` so a new project isn't created every iteration.

On a first run, when `.design/` doesn't exist yet, the skill asks for the site name, audience, page list and brand colours, then writes `SITE.md`, `DESIGN.md` and the first baton file. After that you can drive it by hand, answering "next", or let the agent run until the site is done. One caveat: the `compatibility` field marks this skill `claude-code-only`, so installs on Codex, Cursor and the other listed platforms will succeed but the loop behaviour there isn't guaranteed. Worth testing before you lean on it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill design-loop -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-loop/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill design-loop -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill design-loop -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills design-loop
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill design-loop -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/frontend/skills/design-loop
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill design-loop -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/frontend/skills/design-loop/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an entire site page by page without launching each generation by hand
- keep one design system across every page via DESIGN.md
- wire a new page into the existing navigation and links
- check a page visually right after it is generated
- resume the build where the previous run stopped

## Example prompts
- run the design loop and build all the pages
- build the next page
- keep going, don't stop

# Design Loop — Autonomous Site Builder

Build complete multi-page websites through an autonomous loop. Each iteration reads a task, generates a page, integrates it, verifies it visually, then writes the next task to keep going.

## Overview

The Design Loop uses a "baton" pattern — a file (`.design/next-prompt.md`) acts as a relay baton between iterations. Each cycle:

1. Reads the current task from the baton
2. Generates the page (via Claude or Google Stitch)
3. Integrates into the site structure (navigation, links)
4. Verifies visually via browser automation (if available)
5. Updates site documentation
6. Writes the NEXT task to the baton — keeping the loop alive

This is orchestration-agnostic. The loop can be driven by:
- **Human-in-loop**: User reviews each page, then says "next" or "keep going"
- **Fully autonomous**: Claude runs continuously until the site is complete
- **CI/CD**: Triggered on `.design/next-prompt.md` changes

## Generation Backends

| Backend | Setup | Quality | Speed | Best for |
|---------|-------|---------|-------|----------|
| **Claude** (default) | Zero dependencies | Great — production-ready HTML/Tailwind | Fast | Most projects, full code control |
| **Google Stitch** | `npm install @google/stitch-sdk` + API key | Higher fidelity AI designs | ~10-20s/screen | Design-heavy projects, visual polish |

### Detecting Stitch

At the start of each loop, check if Stitch is available:

1. Check if `@google/stitch-sdk` is installed: `ls node_modules/@google/stitch-sdk 2>/dev/null`
2. Check if `STITCH_API_KEY` is set in `.dev.vars` or environment
3. Check if `.design/metadata.json` exists (contains Stitch project ID)

If all three are present, use Stitch. Otherwise, fall back to Claude generation.
