# design-code-architecture

Walks you from an app idea to a deliberate architecture: eight phases, a question at every decision point, results written into docs/. Useful when you need to pick boundaries and split the domain.

## What it does

The skill turns architecture design into an eight-phase journey. Each phase leans on its own skill: `clean-architecture`, `domain-driven-design`, `system-design`, `ddia-systems`, `software-design-philosophy`, `release-it`, `pragmatic-programmer`, `37signals-way`. The agent asks before every decision and records the outcome in `docs/` — `ARCHITECTURE.md`, `DESIGN-CODE-ARCHITECTURE-PLAN.md`, `TECH-DEBT.md`, `RELIABILITY.md`, `TESTING.md`. You can stop after any phase: on the next run the journey reads the tracker and resumes instead of restarting.

The reasoning is simple. Only some decisions are expensive to reverse — boundaries, the domain model, storage choices. Those get made on purpose; everything cheap gets deferred. The skill defaults to a modular monolith and splits services only along proven bounded contexts. Every hard-to-reverse call lands as a row in the Decision Log with the reason and the rejected alternatives.

On the first run it interviews you: what the app does, which stack you lean toward, realistic year-one load, which outbound dependencies it calls — payments, email, LLM APIs, queues. If nobody has validated the idea yet, the journey routes you to `create-business` or `create-app` first. It is not meant for an existing codebase; there you want `remove-technical-debt`, `improve-code-quality` or `architecture-optimization`. For a single framework in isolation, invoke that skill directly.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill design-code-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-code-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill design-code-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill design-code-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wondelai/skills design-code-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill design-code-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wondelai/skills --path design-code-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill design-code-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wondelai/skills/tree/HEAD/design-code-architecture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- settle module boundaries before code locks them in
- find where the business actually splits into bounded contexts
- choose monolith or microservices on evidence, not vibes
- match data model and consistency level to the real workload
- log expensive-to-reverse decisions with rejected alternatives

## Example prompts
- Help me design the architecture for a new app — start with the intake questions
- How should I structure this app and where do the module boundaries go?
- Resume the journey from phase 4 using the tracker in docs/

# Design Code Architecture

Design the architecture for a new app: get the small number of expensive-to-reverse decisions right and stay aggressively simple everywhere else. This is an interactive, resumable journey of eight phases — the agent asks before every decision and records the outcome in your project's `docs/` folder, so you can stop after any phase and resume later. It runs from the most foundational and hardest-to-reverse (boundaries, domain) through the tunable (data, resilience) to the cross-cutting disciplines (complexity, reversibility, scope) you apply throughout. A weekend project uses three phases lightly; a funded team building toward launch wants the whole stack.
