# design-better

A skill that pushes any coding agent toward designer-quality frontend work: hierarchy, states, accessibility, motion. Useful when the UI runs fine but still looks unfinished.

## What it does

\`design-better` sits on top of whatever agent is writing or refactoring your frontend. It does not own colors or typography — `docs/design.md` does that — and instead owns craft: hierarchy, interaction, accessibility, motion, polish. Every visual decision has to cite a token by name (`{colors.primary}`, `{rounded.md}`) rather than drop in a hex value or an arbitrary pixel size.

Inside are a 50-item heuristics catalogue and a Laws of UX set, drawn from Nielsen Norman Group, Shneiderman, Refactoring UI, WCAG 2.2, Apple HIG and Material 3. Before handing anything back, the agent runs a pre-flight list: every interactive element gets default, hover, active, disabled and loading states; every async surface gets empty, loading, error and success; every input gets an associated `<label>`, the right `inputmode` and an `autocomplete` attribute; motion stays within 150–400 ms and honors `prefers-reduced-motion`.

No `docs/design.md` in the project? The skill falls back to your existing conventions — theme config, CSS custom properties, the component library — and suggests establishing a single token source through the Design System skill. A token the system lacks gets flagged as a New Pattern instead of being invented inline. That fallback is the catch: without a design system file, some decisions land on you to confirm.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --skill design-better -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-better/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-better/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --skill design-better -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-better/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --skill design-better -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-better/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BuildGreatProducts/builder-os design-better
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-better/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --skill design-better -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --path skills/design-better
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-better/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BuildGreatProducts/builder-os --skill design-better -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BuildGreatProducts/builder-os/tree/HEAD/skills/design-better/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn a working screen into a designed one
- review UI against named heuristics instead of taste
- cover button and form states before release
- bring motion and contrast up to accessibility rules
- keep visual decisions inside design-system tokens

## Example prompts
- design better: rework this signup screen with proper hierarchy and states
- make this UI feel more designed, follow UX heuristics
- review this diff for craft — states, contrast, motion

name: design-better
description: Use when the user is building or refactoring UI in their product codebase and wants designer-quality frontend code — not just functional code. Triggers on phrases like "design better", "make this UI feel more designed", "elevate the design quality", "build this with design best practices", "follow UX heuristics", "make this feel professional", "apply design polish", "review this for craft", or any request to apply UX/UI craft heuristics to code generation or review. Pairs with `docs/design.md` when it exists — the design system file owns **style** (colors, typography, spacing tokens, components), this skill owns **craft** (hierarchy, interaction, accessibility, motion, polish). Reference `docs/design.md` tokens by name for every visual decision; apply the 50-item heuristics catalogue and the Laws of UX catalogue below for every craft decision. When `docs/design.md` is absent, fall back to the codebase's existing design conventions and recommend the **Design System** skill. When a heuristic implies a token the design system doesn't have, flag it as a New Pattern to add via the **Design System** skill — never invent a value inline. Fully standalone.

# Design Better

A craft layer for any coding agent generating or reviewing UI. Style is owned by `docs/design.md`; this skill owns the timeless UX/UI craft heuristics — drawn from Nielsen Norman Group, the [Laws of UX](https://lawsofux.com/), Shneiderman, Refactoring UI, WCAG 2.2, Don Norman, Apple HIG, Material 3, and 2025–2026 AI-product patterns — that separate "shipped" from "designed."

> **Boundary.** When a heuristic implies a visual property, reference a `docs/design.md` token by name (`{colors.primary}`, `{rounded.md}`). If `docs/design.md` doesn't have the token, flag it as a New Pattern to add via the **Design System** skill — never inline hex, font names, or arbitrary px. If `docs/design.md` doesn't exist at all, follow the codebase's existing convention for that property (theme config, CSS custom properties, component library) and note it.
