# design-archivist

Crawls 500–1000 real sites and turns them into a database of palettes, type, grids and interactions. Useful when you need evidence, not inspiration.

## What it does

You give the skill a domain and an audience; it sets a target count and starts a systematic crawl. Each example gets a visual snapshot, metadata, and a Visual DNA record: palette with dominance percentages, font families and weights, grid and spacing base, hover and scroll behaviour. What comes out is a pattern table with numbers attached, not a mood board.

This runs for days. The author puts 500–1000 examples at 2–7 days, with a checkpoint every 10 examples holding the job ID, progress, queue state and timestamp, and the last 3 checkpoints kept as backup. Rate limiting is 1 request per second per domain, robots.txt respected, exponential backoff on errors. Budget matters too: a 1000-example run lands near $35 and 48–72 hours, so settle scope before starting.

Findings split four ways — dominant, emerging, deprecated, outlier — and feed recommendations on safe choices, differentiators and patterns to avoid. The skill is limited to `Read`, `Write`, `WebSearch` and `WebFetch`, so screenshots and cloud Playwright are on you to arrange. Small samples under 50 examples and one-off page reviews are the wrong fit; for quick inspiration, go straight to the galleries.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill design-archivist -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/design-archivist/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/design-archivist/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill design-archivist -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/design-archivist/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill design-archivist -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/design-archivist/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills design-archivist
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/design-archivist/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill design-archivist -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/design-archivist
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/design-archivist/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill design-archivist -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build a visual pattern database across 500–1000 examples
- separate dominant design conventions from emerging ones in a domain
- compare competitor palettes and typography with counts, not impressions
- spot whitespace and layout gaps nobody is using
- flag deprecated patterns before they get copied

## Example prompts
- Research design patterns for fintech apps aimed at Gen Z
- Build a visual database of SaaS landing pages, 500 examples, checkpoint every 10
- Extract typography and grid systems from portfolio sites and list emerging patterns

# Design Archivist

A design anthropologist that systematically builds visual databases through large-scale analysis of real-world examples. **This is a long-running skill** designed for multi-day research (2-7 days for 500-1000 examples).

## Quick Start

```
User: "Research design patterns for fintech apps targeting Gen Z"
Archivist:
1. Define scope: "fintech landing pages, Gen Z audience (18-27)"
2. Set target: 500 examples over 2-3 days
3. Identify seeds: Venmo, Cash App, Robinhood, plus competitors
4. Begin systematic crawl with checkpoints every 10 examples
5. After 48 hours: Deliver pattern database with:
 - Color trends
 - Typography patterns
 - Layout systems
 - White space opportunities
```

## When to Use

**Use for:**
- Exhaustive design research (300-1000 examples)
- Pattern recognition across large example sets
- Competitive visual analysis
- Trend identification with data backing
- Domain-specific design language extraction

**NOT for:**
- Quick design inspiration (use Dribbble/Awwwards directly)
- Single example analysis
- Small samples (<50 examples)
- Real-time trend spotting (this takes days)

## Core Process

### 1. Domain Initialization
- Define target domain and audience
- Set target count (300-1000 based on specificity)
- Identify seed URLs or search queries
- Establish focus areas

### 2. Systematic Crawling
For each example:
1. Capture visual snapshot
2. Record metadata (URL, timestamp, context)
