## What it does

The skill covers deserialization of untrusted data in Java, PHP, and Python. It helps identify `ObjectInputStream`, `unserialize`, `pickle`, serialized objects in cookies and requests, plus markers for Java, PHP, and Python formats.

It includes Java gadget-chain analysis, Apache Shiro and WebLogic cases, RMI Registry, PHP magic methods, and Python pickle. The playbook also uses `ysoserial`, the `URLDNS` chain for a safer confirmation probe, and `nmap` for checking exposed services.

JDK version matters for Java checks: from `8u191` onward, remote class loading through RMI and LDAP is blocked, while serialized gadget-object paths remain relevant. Check chain compatibility against the libraries on the target classpath.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill deserialization-insecure -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/deserialization-insecure/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill deserialization-insecure -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill deserialization-insecure -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yaklang/hack-skills deserialization-insecure
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill deserialization-insecure -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills --path skills/deserialization-insecure
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill deserialization-insecure -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find unsafe deserialization points
- identify Java, PHP, and Python serialization in traffic
- confirm Java deserialization with a DNS probe
- match a gadget chain to application libraries
- review Apache Shiro and WebLogic exposure

## Example prompts
- “Audit this project for unsafe deserialization in Java, PHP, and Python. Check `ObjectInputStream`, `unserialize`, and `pickle` separately.”
- “Review this HTTP traffic for Java, PHP, or Python deserialization markers and explain what each indicator means.”
- “Analyze the Apache Shiro `rememberMe` and WebLogic risks, taking the JDK version and classpath libraries into account.”

# SKILL: Insecure Deserialization — Expert Attack Playbook

> **AI LOAD INSTRUCTION**: Expert deserialization techniques across Java, PHP, and Python. Covers gadget chain selection, traffic fingerprinting, tool usage (ysoserial, PHPGGC), Shiro/WebLogic/Commons Collections specifics, Phar deserialization, and Python pickle abuse. Base models often miss the distinction between finding the sink and finding a usable gadget chain.

## 0. RELATED ROUTING

- [jndi-injection](../jndi-injection/SKILL.md) when deserialization leads to JNDI lookup (e.g., post-JDK 8u191 bypass via LDAP → deserialization)
- [unauthorized-access-common-services](../unauthorized-access-common-services/SKILL.md) when the deserialization endpoint is an exposed management service (RMI Registry, T3, AJP)
- [ghost-bits-cast-attack](../ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md) when a WAF blocks your BCEL ClassLoader or Fastjson `@type` payload — Ghost Bits wraps each bytecode byte in a Unicode char whose low 8 bits match, yielding a payload the WAF cannot fingerprint

Also load [JAVA_GADGET_CHAINS.md](./JAVA_GADGET_CHAINS.md) when you need:
- Java gadget chain version compatibility matrix (CommonsCollections 1–7, CommonsBeanutils, Spring, JDK-only, Groovy, Hibernate, ROME, C3P0, etc.)
- SnakeYAML gadget (ScriptEngineManager/URLClassLoader) with exploit JAR structure
- Hessian/Kryo/Avro/XStream deserialization patterns and traffic fingerprints
- .NET ViewState deserialization (machineKey requirement, ViewState forgery with ysoserial.net, Blacklist3r)
- Ruby YAML.load vs YAML.safe_load exploitation with version-specific chains
- Detection fingerprints: magic bytes table by format (Java `AC ED`, .NET `AAEAAD`, Python pickle `80 0N`, PHP `O:`, Ruby `04 08`)

## 1. TRAFFIC FINGERPRINTING — IS IT DESERIALIZATION?

### Java Serialized Objects

| Indicator | Where to Look |
|---|---|
| Hex `ac ed 00 05` | Raw binary in request/response body, cookies, POST params |
| Base64 `rO0AB` | Cookies (`rememberMe`), hidden form fields, JWT claims |
| `Content-Type: application/x-java-serialized-object` | HTTP headers |
| T3/IIOP protocol traffic | WebLogic ports (7001, 7002) |

### PHP Serialized Objects

| Indicator | Where to Look |
|---|---|
| `O:NUMBER:"ClassName"` pattern | POST body, cookies, session files |
| `a:NUMBER:{` (array) | Same locations |
```
