Calculates depreciation for business assets under MACRS and Section 179, then builds a schedule for Form 4562. Useful when you track purchases for Schedule C.

## What it does

The skill finds large purchases that qualify as business assets and sorts them into recovery periods: 3, 5, 7, 15, 27.5 and 39 years. Each asset gets a date placed in service, a cost basis (price plus sales tax, delivery and installation) and an annual deduction. It also walks through the choice between Section 179 expensing, bonus depreciation and regular MACRS.

Inside are MACRS rate tables for 5-year and 7-year property using the 200% declining balance method with the half-year convention, plus a five-step workflow. With Wilson tools connected, the skill searches transactions through `transaction_search`, tags them with `categorize` and exports the schedule with `export_transactions`. Without them you build the same table by hand.

Land is never depreciable, so a real property purchase has to be split between land and building. Passenger automobiles carry their own caps, and if business use of an asset drops below 50% you must recapture excess depreciation and switch to straight-line. The 2025 Section 179 limit sits around $1,220,000 with phase-out starting near $3,050,000, and bonus depreciation rates fall from 40% in 2025 to 20% in 2026. This is not tax advice — filing decisions belong with a CPA.

## Install

```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/depreciation-schedule/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/depreciation-schedule/
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill depreciation-schedule -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/depreciation-schedule/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill depreciation-schedule -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/depreciation-schedule/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
## When to use it
- find large purchases that qualify as business assets
- assign an asset class and recovery period from the MACRS table
- compute annual deductions using 5-year and 7-year rates
- choose between Section 179, bonus depreciation and regular MACRS
- assemble a depreciation schedule for Form 4562 and Schedule C, Line 13
## Example prompts
- find this year's equipment purchases and calculate MACRS depreciation
- sort these assets into classes and build a schedule for Form 4562
- compare Section 179 and bonus depreciation for a new laptop
# Depreciation Schedule
## Overview
Tracks business asset purchases and calculates annual depreciation deductions using the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS). Also covers Section 179 immediate expensing for qualifying assets. Reports to Schedule C, Line 13 via Form 4562.
## Wilson Tools Used
- `transaction_search` — Find asset purchases (equipment, furniture, vehicles, property)
- `categorize` — Tag transactions as depreciable assets with their asset class
- `export_transactions` — Export asset list and depreciation schedule for Form 4562
## Workflow
1. Use `transaction_search` to find large purchases that qualify as business assets (typically items with a useful life over 1 year).
2. For each asset, determine:
   - Date placed in service
   - Cost basis (purchase price + sales tax + delivery/installation)
   - Asset class and recovery period (see table below)
3. Decide whether to use Section 179 expensing, bonus depreciation, or regular MACRS.
4. Calculate the annual depreciation for each asset.
5. Use `export_transactions` to generate a depreciation schedule for Form 4562.
### MACRS Recovery Periods
| Recovery Period | Asset Class | Examples |
|----------------|-------------|----------|
| 3-year | Certain tools, livestock | Tractor units, rented personal property |
| 5-year | Computers, office equipment | Laptops, printers, copiers, automobiles, light trucks |
| 7-year | Office furniture, fixtures | Desks, chairs, shelving, most machinery |
| 15-year | Land improvements | Parking lots, fences, landscaping |
| 27.5-year | Residential rental property | Rental houses, apartments |
| 39-year | Commercial real property | Office buildings, retail space, warehouses |
### MACRS Depreciation Rates (200% Declining Balance, Half-Year Convention)
**5-Year Property:**
| Year | Rate |
|------|------|
| 1 | 20.00% |
| 2 | 32.00% |
| 3 | 19.20% |
| 4 | 11.52% |
| 5 | 11.52% |
| 6 | 5.76% |
**7-Year Property:**
| Year | Rate |
|------|------|
| 1 | 14.29% |
| 2 | 24.49% |
| 3 | 17.49% |
| 4 | 12.49% |
| 5 | 8.93% |
| 6 | 8.92% |
| 7 | 8.93% |
| 8 | 4.46% |
