# deployment-automation

Plans release rollouts and safe rollback workflows. Useful when code builds reliably but staging-to-production deployment lacks clear guardrails.

## What it does

This skill organizes release execution for backend and fullstack software. It establishes a concrete release profile before suggesting actions, taking into account stateful database risks and verification depth. Instead of guessing workflows, it prompts the agent to inspect actual artifacts, deploy commands, and existing health checks.

Predefined reference templates guide specific execution paths. These handle preview branch checks, canary rollouts, staging sign-offs, and emergency containment when a release breaks. The skill relies on standard tools like `Read`, `Write`, and `Grep` to evaluate repository configs.

Without a working build or passing tests, this skill will not help. It strictly enforces operational boundaries: machine setup and Docker installation route to `system-environment-setup`, while Vercel domain handling belongs in `vercel-deploy`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill deployment-automation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/deployment-automation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill deployment-automation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill deployment-automation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills deployment-automation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill deployment-automation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/deployment-automation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill deployment-automation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/deployment-automation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Select a rollout pattern such as blue-green, canary, or rolling updates
- Structure verification gates for staging-to-production promotion
- Prepare a containment and rollback path for a failed rollout
- Define verification criteria and preflight checks for preview branches

## Example prompts
- Review our release workflow and create a staging-to-production promotion gate
- Plan a canary deployment for this API service with clear stop conditions
- Help contain a failed rollout and prepare safe rollback steps

# Deployment Automation

Use this skill when the job is **safe release execution after the system is already buildable**.

`deployment-automation` is the repo's release-execution anchor for:
- preview releases and shareable review environments
- staging → production promotion and sign-off gates
- rollout strategy choice: replace, rolling, blue-green, canary, progressive
- post-deploy verification and stop conditions
- rollback response and bad-release containment
- release-hardening packets around an existing deploy path

Read these support docs before deciding the packet:
- [references/deployment-modes-and-boundaries.md](references/deployment-modes-and-boundaries.md)
- [references/release-packet-templates.md](references/release-packet-templates.md)
- [references/strategy-selection-and-stop-conditions.md](references/strategy-selection-and-stop-conditions.md)
- [references/rollout-and-rollback-checklist.md](references/rollout-and-rollback-checklist.md)
- [references/platform-routing-notes.md](references/platform-routing-notes.md)

## When to use this skill
- A preview or branch deployment exists, but nobody agrees what it is supposed to prove before merge.
- A release already works mechanically, but staging/prod promotion still depends on tribal knowledge.
- The main decision is rollout strategy, release gates, verification depth, or rollback readiness.
