# dependencies-audit

This skill finds vulnerabilities, outdated and deprecated packages, license problems and supply-chain risks, then fixes them instead of only reporting.

## What it does

The skill reads `package.json` and lists every dependency and devDependency. It then pulls npm metadata for each one: latest version, last publish date, weekly downloads, deprecated flag. Packages more than a major version behind get bumped with `pnpm update`, followed by `pnpm install` and `pnpm run build`. If a major bump breaks the build, that update is reverted and flagged for manual work.

Security runs as its own step: `pnpm audit --json` plus a production-only audit. Auto-fixable issues go through `pnpm audit fix`; remaining high and critical CVEs mean editing the version in `package.json` by hand, and transitive dependencies get pinned with `pnpm overrides`. Every package receives a Pass, Warn or Fail score based on downloads, publish recency and known CVEs. Fail-scored packages are replaced or dropped when a native implementation covers the same ground.

The skill targets Flows apps and produces the `review-packages.md` artifact their review process expects. You need Node.js and npm or pnpm in the project. `@cognite/*` and `@types/*` packages are trusted even with low download counts, and packages published less than six months ago get a Warn rather than an automatic Fail.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cognitedata/builder-skills --skill dependencies-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dependencies-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cognitedata/builder-skills --skill dependencies-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cognitedata/builder-skills --skill dependencies-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cognitedata/builder-skills dependencies-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cognitedata/builder-skills --skill dependencies-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cognitedata/builder-skills --path skills/dependencies-audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cognitedata/builder-skills --skill dependencies-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cognitedata/builder-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dependencies-audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find vulnerable packages and close CVEs
- update dependencies that fell a major version behind
- swap unmaintained packages for maintained alternatives
- flag packages with risky install scripts
- produce `review-packages.md` for Flows app review

## Example prompts
- audit the dependencies in package.json and fix everything you find
- run a security audit and close the critical CVEs
- update outdated packages and make sure the build still passes

# Dependencies Fix

Find and fix all dependency issues in **$ARGUMENTS** (or the root `package.json` if no argument is given) — vulnerabilities, outdated packages, deprecated dependencies, license problems, and supply-chain risks. This skill produces the `review-packages.md` artifact required by the Flows app review process.

---

## Step 1 — Read and list all dependencies

```bash
# List all dependencies and devDependencies
node -e "
  const pkg = require('./package.json');
  console.log('=== Dependencies ===');
  Object.entries(pkg.dependencies || {}).forEach(([name, ver]) => console.log(name + ' @ ' + ver));
  console.log('\\n=== Dev Dependencies ===');
  Object.entries(pkg.devDependencies || {}).forEach(([name, ver]) => console.log(name + ' @ ' + ver));
"
```

Record the total count of dependencies and devDependencies.

---

## Step 2 — Look up npm metadata and update outdated packages

For each package, gather:
- **Latest version** on npm
- **Weekly downloads**
- **Last publish date**
- **Deprecated** flag

```bash
# Batch lookup — run for each package (example for a single package)
npm view <package-name> --json 2>/dev/null | node -e "
  const data = JSON.parse(require('fs').readFileSync('/dev/stdin','utf8'));
  console.log(JSON.stringify({
    name: data.name,
    latest: data['dist-tags']?.latest,
    modified: data.time?.modified,
    deprecated: data.deprecated || false,
  }));
"
# For weekly downloads, use the npm API
curl -s "https://api.npmjs.org/downloads/point/last-week/<package-name>" | node -e "
  const data = JSON.parse(require('fs').readFileSync('/dev/stdin','utf8'));
  console.log(data.downloads);
"
```

For efficiency, batch multiple lookups. If the project has many dependencies, use a script:

```bash
node -e "
  const { execSync } = require('child_process');
  const pkg = require('./package.json');
