# information-architecture

Keeps a large app navigable: what to call each entity, how screens map to the data model, and when to ask before a destructive action.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when you are structuring a big application or naming its entities. It argues that each major entity deserves its own list and detail view, and that relationships should be visible through breadcrumbs and parent labels rather than hidden behind one combined screen. Naming gets the most attention. Users should read their own vocabulary, not the team's internal shorthand, and a term has to stay identical in the sidebar, the page title and the confirmation dialog.

State transitions are covered too. A draft becomes published, an invoice moves from pending to paid, and the button carries the transformation: "Publish", "Mark as paid". Before anything irreversible the skill wants the dialog to state the blast radius, so the user sees how many tasks get archived and who loses access. Button labels stay short, one word where possible, with the heading around them doing the explaining.

It activates on paths such as `components/**`, `app/**`, `pages/**` and on `**/*.tsx` and `**/*.jsx` files, so a project laid out differently may not trigger it on its own. Worth reaching for when the module count has outgrown anyone's mental map.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill information-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/information-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill information-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill information-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills information-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill information-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/information-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill information-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/information-architecture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- name entities so a new user gets them without training
- tell apart two similar sections like Users and Members
- design navigation for a multi-module product
- add a confirmation step before deleting a project
- show what a bulk action will actually affect

## Example prompts
- How should I structure navigation for this app?
- What should we call this entity for customers, not internally?
- Add a confirm dialog before deleting a project

# Information Architecture

In small products, users find their way by exploring. In large applications — multi-module SaaS, ERPs, analytics platforms, marketplaces — exploration breaks down. The structure itself must do the navigational work. Information architecture is the design of that structure: what exists, what it is called, and how it relates to everything else.

Good IA is invisible. Users find what they need without thinking about the structure. Bad IA forces users to hold a map in their head.

---

## Naming is Design

The names given to entities, sections, and actions are one of the most consequential design decisions in a large application. Bad names create cognitive friction on every visit.
