## What it does

The skill splits form guidance into three layers and keeps them apart. Helper text sits below the input, always visible, one sentence about what to enter. A placeholder shows the format as a realistic example and disappears on typing. Validation gets the most attention.

Timing is picked per field: on blur for most inputs, real-time for complex formats like IBAN or a VAT number, on submit to catch what slipped through and scroll to the first error. For live validation the skill advises against firing an error on the first keystroke — wait 300–500ms instead. The submit button enables once the form is valid. On long forms where live checking is impractical, leave the button alone and validate on submit.

Inside you get field markup with `aria-describedby` and `aria-invalid`, grouping through `<fieldset>` and `<legend>`, a table of `input` types and `autocomplete` values. One section covers required versus optional: mark the minority, and never by colour alone. The skill activates on `components/**`, `**/*.tsx`, `**/*.jsx`, `**/*.html` and in `design-system/**` and `ui/**`, so a project without that component layout won't pick it up.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill form-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/form-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/form-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill form-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/form-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill form-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/form-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills form-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/form-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill form-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/form-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/form-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill form-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- write helper text that explains a field instead of repeating its label
- pick the right validation timing for a field with a complex format
- wire an error to its input with `aria-describedby` and `aria-invalid`
- group address or payment fields into a `<fieldset>` with a `<legend>`
- mark optional fields without leaning on colour alone

## Example prompts
- add helper text to this email input
- validate this field in real time
- disable the submit button until the form is valid

# Form Design

Forms are where users give the product data. Every unnecessary obstacle between the user and a completed form is a failure. The design goal is to make correct input easy and incorrect input obvious — before the user submits.

---

## The Three Guidance Layers

Each layer serves a distinct purpose. Do not collapse them.

### Layer 1 — Helper Text
Explains *what* to enter. Appears below the input, always visible, in small secondary text.

```
Email address
[                              ]
Use the email you signed up with.
```

- Write in plain language from the user's perspective
- Keep it to one sentence — if you need more, the field is too complex or misnamed
- Do not repeat the label ("Enter your email" below a label that says "Email" is redundant)
- Helper text is not a replacement for a label — the label is still required

### Layer 2 — Placeholder
Shows the *format* or an example value. Appears inside the input, disappears on typing.

```
[jane@example.com              ]
```

- Use a realistic example, not a description: `+358 40 123 4567` not `Enter phone number`
- Never use placeholder as a label — it disappears and leaves the user without context
- Keep it grey (`--color-text-secondary`) and lighter than actual input text
- Optional — not every field needs a placeholder

### Layer 3 — Validation
Confirms whether the input is correct. The most important layer.

```
Email address
[jane@           ] ← invalid
