## What it does

The skill looks for spots where a bit of joy fits: finished actions, first runs, loading waits, achievements, hovers and clicks. It starts by working out the context — the product's tone, who the audience is, what's appropriate. A banking app and a game need different things, and the skill accounts for that.

Inside are principles for subtle micro-interactions, copywriting guidance (friendly error and empty-state text), illustrations and background effects. Separate sections cover buttons, loading, success and hover states with CSS examples. The skill advises upgrading existing elements first — bullets, links, checkboxes, cards — before inventing new components.

One hard limit: delight must not get in the way of the task. If users notice the animation more than the result, you've gone too far. The skill requires loading `$frontend-design` and following its context-gathering protocol; if no design context exists yet, load `$setup` first. It is not a tool for baseline cleanup or stronger visual impact.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill delight -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/delight/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/delight/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill delight -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/delight/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill delight -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/delight/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui delight
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/delight/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill delight -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/delight
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/delight/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill delight -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/delight/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bring a first-run empty screen to life
- soften an error message so it doesn't annoy
- make a button press feel satisfying
- design an animation for a completed action
- give a loading screen some character

## Example prompts
- /delight add some joy to the payment success screen
- /delight liven up the empty state of the projects list
- /delight make the product card hovers feel nicer

description: Add moments of joy, personality, and surprise through success states, empty states, loading moments, hover details, and celebratory polish once the fundamentals already work. Identify opportunities to add moments of joy, personality, and unexpected polish that transform functional interfaces into delightful experiences.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/delight`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first. Additionally gather: what's appropriate for the domain (playful vs professional vs quirky vs elegant).

---

## Assess Delight Opportunities

Identify where delight would enhance (not distract from) the experience:

1. **Find natural delight moments**:
   - **Success states**: Completed actions (save, send, publish)
   - **Empty states**: First-time experiences, onboarding
   - **Loading states**: Waiting periods that could be entertaining
   - **Achievements**: Milestones, streaks, completions
   - **Interactions**: Hover states, clicks, drags
   - **Errors**: Softening frustrating moments
   - **Easter eggs**: Hidden discoveries for curious users

2. **Understand the context**:
   - What's the brand personality? (Playful? Professional? Quirky? Elegant?)
   - Who's the audience? (Tech-savvy? Creative? Corporate?)
   - What's the emotional context? (Accomplishment? Exploration? Frustration?)
   - What's appropriate? (Banking app ≠ gaming app)

3. **Define delight strategy**:
   - **Subtle sophistication**: Refined micro-interactions (luxury brands)
   - **Playful personality**: Whimsical illustrations and copy (consumer apps)
   - **Helpful surprises**: Anticipating needs before users ask (productivity tools)
   - **Sensory richness**: Satisfying sounds, smooth animations (creative tools)

If any of these are unclear from the codebase, ask the user directly to clarify what you cannot infer.

**CRITICAL**: Delight should enhance usability, never obscure it. If users notice the delight more than accomplishing their goal, you've gone too far.

Delight is not a license for random whimsy. The quieter the product category, the more subtle the delight should be.

Consult the [ai slop detection](../frontend-design/reference/ai-slop-detection.md) reference so delight stays distinctive instead of sliding into generic trend decoration.
Consult the [finishing touches](../frontend-design/reference/finishing-touches.md) when delight should come from upgraded defaults, accent borders, subtle background treatments, or unexpected component presentation.
