## What it does

The skill walks through seven steps. You start with a measurable outcome, branch into 3–5 opportunity areas phrased as customer needs rather than features, then attach evidence to each one — research quotes, behavioural data, support tickets. Under every opportunity you generate 2–4 solutions, and for the promising ones you name the riskiest assumption and design a lightweight test for it.

Output follows the template in `references/TEMPLATE.md` and fills every section: desired outcome, visual tree, opportunity branches, prioritization, experiments backlog, learning log, next steps. A finished example sits in `references/EXAMPLE.md`. The tree structures discovery; it does not score a flat list of candidates. For ranking, the description points to `define-prioritization-framework`.

A tree without an agreed outcome just decorates opinions, so the description names `foundation-okr-writer` for setting that outcome first. Framing a single problem is a job for `define-problem-statement`, and testing one assumption goes to `define-hypothesis` followed by `measure-experiment-design`. Worth checking before you start, otherwise you get a tidy diagram with nothing behind it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill define-opportunity-tree -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/define-opportunity-tree/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/define-opportunity-tree/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill define-opportunity-tree -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/define-opportunity-tree/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill define-opportunity-tree -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/define-opportunity-tree/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install product-on-purpose/pm-skills define-opportunity-tree
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/define-opportunity-tree/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill define-opportunity-tree -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/product-on-purpose/pm-skills --path skills/define-opportunity-tree
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/define-opportunity-tree/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add product-on-purpose/pm-skills --skill define-opportunity-tree -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- connect scattered feature ideas to real customer needs
- show stakeholders how the roadmap traces back to an outcome
- turn research findings into concrete next actions
- decide which opportunity branch to explore first
- write testable assumptions for each candidate solution

## Example prompts
- build an opportunity solution tree for improving retention
- turn these feature ideas into an opportunity tree
- structure my interview notes as an opportunity solution tree

For ranking an existing flat list of candidates, use define-prioritization-framework instead; this skill discovers the list, it does not score one.

# Opportunity Solution Tree

An Opportunity Solution Tree (OST) is a visual framework for product discovery that connects business outcomes to customer opportunities and potential solutions. Developed by Teresa Torres, it prevents the common trap of jumping straight to solutions by ensuring every feature idea traces back to a customer need and measurable outcome.

## When to Use

- During continuous product discovery to organize learning
- When prioritizing what opportunities to pursue
- To communicate product strategy to stakeholders
- When you have too many feature ideas and need structure
- After user research to connect insights to action
- When aligning team on what outcomes matter most

## When NOT to Use

- You need to score and rank a flat list of known candidates -> use `define-prioritization-framework`; the tree structures discovery, not a ranking exercise
- You have one specific problem to frame for a team -> use `define-problem-statement`
- You are ready to test a single assumption -> use `define-hypothesis`, then `measure-experiment-design`
- The outcome you want to drive is not yet agreed -> set it first with `foundation-okr-writer`; a tree without an agreed outcome decorates opinions

## Instructions

When asked to create an opportunity solution tree, follow these steps:

1. **Define the Desired Outcome**
   Start at the top with a clear, measurable business or product outcome. This should be something you can influence through product changes. Express it quantitatively when possible (e.g., "Increase 30-day retention from 40% to 55%").
