## What it does

The skill inspects the current state of a codebase and lays out work across six decomposition patterns: identifying and sizing components, gathering common domain components, flattening components, mapping dependencies, grouping components into domains, and extracting domain services. The patterns run in sequence, so the plan reflects what the project has already done and what is still open.

Work is grouped into phases: analysis and preparation, domain organization, then service extraction. Inside a phase the skill ranks items by risk, value and dependencies, scoring each with `Priority = (Value × 3) - (Risk × 2) - (Dependencies × 1)`. The output is a phased roadmap with milestones plus architecture stories you can track progress against.

It is not meant for domain analysis or component sizing. The description points to `domain-analysis` and `component-identification-sizing` for those. And if you have no component inventory or dependency map yet, the roadmap has nothing to stand on — run the analysis first.

Installation goes through `npx skills add`, which drops the skill file into your platform's skills directory.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill decomposition-planning-roadmap -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill decomposition-planning-roadmap -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill decomposition-planning-roadmap -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tech-leads-club/agent-skills decomposition-planning-roadmap
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill decomposition-planning-roadmap -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tech-leads-club/agent-skills --path 'packages/skills-catalog/skills/(architecture)/decomposition-planning-roadmap'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/decomposition-planning-roadmap/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill decomposition-planning-roadmap -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- decide which services to extract first from a monolith
- build a migration roadmap with phases and milestones
- rank decomposition work by risk and value
- map dependencies between decomposition steps
- track progress with architecture stories

## Example prompts
- Create a decomposition roadmap for this codebase
- Prioritize decomposition work based on component analysis
- Create a phased decomposition plan with milestones

# Decomposition Planning and Roadmap

This skill creates structured decomposition plans and roadmaps to guide the migration from monolithic to distributed architectures, prioritizing work and tracking progress through decomposition patterns.

## How to Use

### Quick Start

Request creation of a decomposition plan:

- **"Create a decomposition roadmap for this codebase"**
- **"Plan the decomposition migration strategy"**
- **"Prioritize decomposition work based on component analysis"**
- **"Create a step-by-step decomposition plan"**

### Usage Examples

**Example 1: Complete Roadmap**

```
User: "Create a decomposition roadmap for this codebase"
The skill will:
1. Analyze current codebase state
2. Identify decomposition patterns to apply
3. Prioritize work based on risk and value
4. Create phased roadmap
5. Generate architecture stories
6. Estimate effort and dependencies
```

**Example 2: Prioritized Plan**

```
User: "Prioritize decomposition work based on component analysis"
The skill will:
1. Review component inventory and dependencies
2. Assess risk and value for each pattern
3. Prioritize patterns by impact
4. Create prioritized work plan
```

**Example 3: Phase Planning**

```
User: "Create a phased decomposition plan"
The skill will:
1. Group decomposition patterns into phases
2. Identify dependencies between phases
3. Create phase timeline
4. Define phase success criteria
```

### Step-by-Step Process

1. **Assess Current State**: Analyze codebase and identify what's been done
2. **Identify Patterns**: Determine which decomposition patterns to apply
3. **Prioritize Work**: Rank patterns by risk, value, and dependencies
4. **Create Roadmap**: Build phased plan with milestones
