# decision-records

Keeps an ADR-style registry of decisions: drafts, accepted records, archiving and supersession. Generates INDEX.md and cross-links for you.

## What it does

The skill drops `scripts/decisions.py` into your repo and keeps everything under `docs/decisions/`: `drafts/` for work in progress, `accepted/` for signed-off records, `archived/` for retired ones. A draft gets a 4-letter uppercase ID, an accepted record gets a global counter like `0001`. The `type` field (`architecture`, `product`, `security`, `policy`, `legal`) lives in front-matter only, so every lifecycle directory stays flat and the INDEX groups records by type.

You drive it through subcommands: `build` regenerates INDEX.md and repairs links, `check` validates format and ID uniqueness, `promote` turns a draft into an accepted record, `rename-draft-id` re-IDs a draft, `migrate-layout` flattens the old `accepted/<type>/` layout. `install` sets up the symlink and a pre-commit check. Don't hand-author paths — write the bare ID as inline code and let `build --relink` fix every reference.

Promotion needs explicit human sign-off, because it is a semi-irreversible act. `check` warns when an ID collides with one already in `origin/main`, or when a living doc cites a superseded record, but it never fails the run: a mention can be deliberately historical. Run the tool from anywhere in the repo, it walks up from the CWD to find `docs/`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add skymavis/skills --skill decision-records -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/decision-records/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add skymavis/skills --skill decision-records -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add skymavis/skills --skill decision-records -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install skymavis/skills decision-records
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add skymavis/skills --skill decision-records -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/skymavis/skills --path skills/decision-records
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add skymavis/skills --skill decision-records -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/skymavis/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/decision-records/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- record a decision without losing it among other docs
- regenerate INDEX.md across accepted and archived records
- validate format and ID uniqueness before a commit
- supersede an old decision and point to its successor
- flatten the old accepted/<type>/ layout

## Example prompts
- draft a decision record about the message queue choice
- promote draft CONF into accepted
- rebuild INDEX.md and refresh the links

  Draft, promote, archive, and supersede ADR-style decision records (types are open: architecture,

# Decision records

This skill owns the registry tool `decisions.py`, symlinked into the repo at `scripts/decisions.py`
(run `decisions.py install` to set up the symlink + a CI check). The tool finds the repo's `docs/`
by walking up from the CWD, so run it from anywhere in the repo:

```sh
python scripts/decisions.py build [--relink]            # regenerate INDEX.md (+ refresh links)
python scripts/decisions.py check                       # validate (CI-safe; exit 1 if stale)
python scripts/decisions.py promote <name…> [--deref] [--allow-replace]   # draft(s) -> accepted/
python scripts/decisions.py rename-draft-id <name> <NEW>                  # re-ID a draft
python scripts/decisions.py migrate-layout              # one-shot: old accepted/<type>/ -> flat
python scripts/decisions.py install [repo]              # adopt in a repo: symlink + pre-commit
```

## Layout

Everything the convention owns lives under `docs/decisions/`:

```
docs/
  decisions/              # the convention's namespace (the umbrella)
    INDEX.md              # GENERATED registry over accepted/ + archived/
    README.md             # human guide to the convention (scaffolded by install)
    AGENTS.md             # agent rules: decisions are binding here (scaffolded by install)
    accepted/             # ACCEPTED numbered records — flat; `type` lives in front-matter
    archived/             # RETIRED records (superseded | deprecated) — flat
    drafts/               # WIP candidates — flat, 4-UPPERCASE-letter IDs, NOT in INDEX
  threat-model.md         # other repo docs stay siblings — still cross-reference decisions
```
