# solid-principles

Inspects Java code against SOLID principles and helps break down overloaded classes. Useful during architectural reviews and design refactoring.

## What it does

The skill provides a checklist with Java examples covering each SOLID principle. It flags design smells such as bloated service classes that mix persistence, validation, and notifications, or switch statements that expand with every new business rule. Refactoring solutions rely on standard patterns like Strategy, Decorator, Factory, or Template Method.

Heuristics inside help spot issues early, pointing out mismatched imports or names loaded with `Manager` and `Handler`. Keep in mind that this skill focuses strictly on object-oriented design: for method length, naming conventions, or code duplication, the author points to `clean-code` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill solid-principles -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/solid-principles/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/solid-principles/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill solid-principles -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/solid-principles/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill solid-principles -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/solid-principles/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install decebals/claude-code-java solid-principles
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/solid-principles/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill solid-principles -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java --path skills/solid-principles
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/solid-principles/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill solid-principles -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- identify Single Responsibility violations in monolithic classes
- replace expanding `if/else` logic with the Strategy pattern
- split persistence, validation, and notifications across dedicated classes
- evaluate class design before adding new business variants

## Example prompts
- Check this UserService class against SOLID principles
- Is this Java class doing too much?
- Refactor this discount calculator to follow the Open/Closed principle

# SOLID Principles Skill

Review and apply SOLID principles in Java code.

## When to Use
- User says "check SOLID" / "SOLID review" / "is this class doing too much?"
- Reviewing class design
- Refactoring large classes
- Code review focusing on design

---

## Quick Reference

| Letter | Principle | One-liner |
|--------|-----------|-----------|
| **S** | Single Responsibility | One class = one reason to change |
| **O** | Open/Closed | Open for extension, closed for modification |
| **L** | Liskov Substitution | Subtypes must be substitutable for base types |
| **I** | Interface Segregation | Many specific interfaces > one general interface |
| **D** | Dependency Inversion | Depend on abstractions, not concretions |

---

## S - Single Responsibility Principle (SRP)

> "A class should have only one reason to change."

### Violation

```java
// ❌ BAD: UserService does too much
public class UserService {
    public User createUser(String name, String email) {
        // validation logic
        if (email == null || !email.contains("@")) {
            throw new IllegalArgumentException("Invalid email");
        }
        // persistence logic
        User user = new User(name, email);
        entityManager.persist(user);
        // notification logic
        String subject = "Welcome!";
        String body = "Hello " + name;
        emailClient.send(email, subject, body);
        // audit logic
        auditLog.log("User created: " + email);
        return user;
    }
}
```

**Problems:**
- Validation changes? Modify UserService
- Email template changes? Modify UserService
- Audit format changes? Modify UserService
- Hard to test each concern separately

### Refactored

```java
// ✅ GOOD: Each class has one responsibility
public class UserValidator {
    public void validate(String name, String email) {
        if (email == null || !email.contains("@")) {
            throw new ValidationException("Invalid email");
        }
    }
}
public class UserRepository {
    public User save(User user) {
        entityManager.persist(user);
        return user;
    }
}
public class WelcomeEmailSender {
    public void sendWelcome(User user) {
        String subject = "Welcome!";
        String body = "Hello " + user.getName();
        emailClient.send(user.getEmail(), subject, body);
    }
}
public class UserAuditLogger {
    public void logCreation(User user) {
        auditLog.log("User created: " + user.getEmail());
    }
}
public class UserService {
    private final UserValidator validator;
    private final UserRepository repository;
    private final WelcomeEmailSender emailSender;
