# architecture-review

A skill that reviews a Java project at the macro level: package layout, module boundaries, dependency direction and layering. Useful once a codebase grows past the point where you can hold its structure in your head.

## What it does

The skill looks at the project from above: how packages are arranged, which way dependencies point between layers, whether cycles have crept in. It ships with a table of architecture smells and their symptoms, three package organisation strategies (by layer, by feature, hexagonal) and a five-part review checklist. A separate section covers common anti-patterns: the big ball of mud, the `util/` dumping ground, the anemic domain model, framework coupling inside the domain.

Everything hangs on one rule: dependencies point inward only, from adapters to application and on to the domain. The domain must not import Spring, JPA or Jackson. If an entity pulls in `@Entity` or `@Repository`, the skill flags it and shows the fix — a port interface in the domain, the implementation in an adapter.

There are no scripts or external dependencies here; it is an instruction file for the agent. It runs in Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Copilot installs through `gh skill install`, the rest through `npx skills add`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill architecture-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/architecture-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/architecture-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill architecture-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/architecture-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill architecture-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/architecture-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install decebals/claude-code-java architecture-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/architecture-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill architecture-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/decebals/claude-code-java --path skills/architecture-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/architecture-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add decebals/claude-code-java --skill architecture-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- move packages from layer-based to feature-based layout
- catch circular dependencies between packages
- strip JPA annotations out of domain entities
- judge whether a module is ready to become its own service
- clean up a growing `util/` or `common/` package

## Example prompts
- review the architecture of this project and show dependency direction violations
- check the package structure and tell me where the domain imports infrastructure
- assess which package strategy is in use and what blocks extracting a module

# Architecture Review Skill

Analyze project structure at the macro level - packages, modules, layers, and boundaries.

## When to Use
- User asks "review the architecture" / "check project structure"
- Evaluating package organization
- Checking dependency direction between layers
- Identifying architectural violations
- Assessing clean/hexagonal architecture compliance

---

## Quick Reference: Architecture Smells

| Smell | Symptom | Impact |
|-------|---------|--------|
| Package-by-layer bloat | `service/` with 50+ classes | Hard to find related code |
| Domain → Infra dependency | Entity imports `@Repository` | Core logic tied to framework |
| Circular dependencies | A → B → C → A | Untestable, fragile |
| God package | `util/` or `common/` growing | Dump for misplaced code |
| Leaky abstractions | Controller knows SQL | Layer boundaries violated |

---

## Package Organization Strategies

### Package-by-Layer (Traditional)

```
com.example.app/
├── controller/
│   ├── UserController.java
│   ├── OrderController.java
│   └── ProductController.java
├── service/
│   ├── UserService.java
│   ├── OrderService.java
│   └── ProductService.java
├── repository/
│   ├── UserRepository.java
│   ├── OrderRepository.java
│   └── ProductRepository.java
└── model/
    ├── User.java
    ├── Order.java
    └── Product.java
```

**Pros**: Familiar, simple for small projects
**Cons**: Scatters related code, doesn't scale, hard to extract modules

### Package-by-Feature (Recommended)

```
com.example.app/
├── user/
│   ├── UserController.java
│   ├── UserService.java
│   ├── UserRepository.java
│   └── User.java
├── order/
│   ├── OrderController.java
│   ├── OrderService.java
│   ├── OrderRepository.java
│   └── Order.java
└── product/
    ├── ProductController.java
    ├── ProductService.java
    ├── ProductRepository.java
    └── Product.java
```
