# debugging-dags

Walks an agent from a failed Airflow task to the actual root cause, then to a fix and a way to keep it from recurring. Handy when a DAG won't parse or a task dies without an obvious reason.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a fixed order of work. Find the failed run first, pull the logs for the specific task, and read past the boilerplate to the real exception. Then it sorts the failure into one of four buckets: data, code, infrastructure, dependencies. After that it gathers context — recent deploys, a jump in data volume, whether this task has broken before.

There is a whole section on dependency drift, where the code stayed the same but a package moved. The agent diffs `pip freeze` between the current and previous worker image, inspects args on `@task.virtualenv` and similar operators that build their own environment per run, and checks release dates on the package index. Output is a named cause with an impact assessment and a concrete fix, not “the task failed”.

The CLI steps assume `af` sits on `PATH`; you get it from `astro otto` or by installing it with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`. On OSS Airflow without it, the same investigation happens by hand in the UI and task logs. The skill's own description is blunt about scope: quick “why did it fail, show logs” questions belong to the airflow skill, this one is for a deeper hunt.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill debugging-dags -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/debugging-dags/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/debugging-dags/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill debugging-dags -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/debugging-dags/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill debugging-dags -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/debugging-dags/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astronomer/agents debugging-dags
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/debugging-dags/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill debugging-dags -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astronomer/agents --path skills/debugging-dags
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/debugging-dags/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill debugging-dags -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pin down the root cause of a failed Airflow task
- fix an import error that keeps a DAG out of the parsed list
- spot a package upgrade that broke a task while the code stood still
- work out which tables and reports went stale after the failure
- add data checks so the same breakage doesn't return

## Example prompts
- My `load_orders` DAG keeps failing on the `transform` task — find out why and fix it
- This DAG won't import and `airflow dags list` throws an error on the file, track it down
- The task started failing after the last deploy even though the code didn't change, check whether a package got upgraded

name: debugging-dags
description: Comprehensive DAG failure diagnosis and root-cause analysis with structured investigation and prevention recommendations. Use when deep failure investigation is needed, a DAG fails to import/parse or 'airflow dags list' errors on a file; a task or run is failing and must be diagnosed and fixed; requests like 'why did X fail', 'my dag keeps failing — find and fix it', or fixing a broken DAG so it loads cleanly. For simple 'why did it fail / show logs', the airflow skill handles it directly.

# DAG Diagnosis

You are a data engineer debugging a failed Airflow DAG. Follow this systematic approach to identify the root cause and provide actionable remediation.

## Running the CLI

These commands assume `af` is on PATH. Run via `astro otto` to get it automatically, or install standalone with `uv tool install astro-airflow-mcp`.

---

## Step 1: Identify the Failure

If a specific DAG was mentioned:
- Run `af runs diagnose <dag_id> <dag_run_id>` (if run_id is provided)
- If no run_id specified, run `af dags stats` to find recent failures

If no DAG was specified:
- Run `af health` to find recent failures across all DAGs
- Check for import errors with `af dags errors`
- Show DAGs with recent failures
- Ask which DAG to investigate further

## Step 2: Get the Error Details

Once you have identified a failed task:

1. **Get task logs** using `af tasks logs <dag_id> <dag_run_id> <task_id>`
2. **Look for the actual exception** - scroll past the Airflow boilerplate to find the real error
3. **Categorize the failure type**:
   - **Data issue**: Missing data, schema change, null values, constraint violation
   - **Code issue**: Bug, syntax error, import failure, type error
   - **Infrastructure issue**: Connection timeout, resource exhaustion, permission denied
   - **Dependency issue**: Upstream failure, external API down, rate limiting

## Step 3: Check Context

Gather additional context to understand WHY this happened:

1. **Recent changes**: Was there a code deploy? Check git history if available
2. **Package version changes**: Was a package upgraded — in the image, in a venv-style operator, or at the index? See [Package version changes](#package-version-changes) below.
3. **Data volume**: Did data volume spike? Run a quick count on source tables
4. **Upstream health**: Did upstream tasks succeed but produce unexpected data?
```
