## What it does

The skill lays out a payoff plan two ways. Avalanche targets the highest interest rate first, snowball targets the smallest balance. Each plan comes back as a table per month: payment, principal, interest, remaining balance. At the end you get total months to payoff, total interest paid and total cost for both methods.

It runs two Wilson tools. `transaction_search` finds recurring debt payments over 3 months, `spending_summary` works out average income against average expenses. The gap between them becomes your extra payment capacity. Balances and rates it cannot pull from transactions — you enter those yourself for every debt. If the extra capacity comes in under $50/month, the skill tells you to work on income or spending first instead of pushing extra payments.

There is a fallback without Wilson: a spreadsheet with amortization formulas, and when one debt hits zero its payment rolls onto the next in line. Interest is treated as fixed, so variable-rate debts can throw the schedule off — worth recalculating when a rate moves. Have the balance and rate for each debt ready beforehand, or the calculation step has nothing to work with.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill debt-payoff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/debt-payoff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/debt-payoff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill debt-payoff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/debt-payoff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill debt-payoff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/debt-payoff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openaccountant/skills debt-payoff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/debt-payoff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill debt-payoff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/openaccountant/skills --path personal/debt-payoff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/debt-payoff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill debt-payoff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/openaccountant/skills/tree/HEAD/personal/debt-payoff/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map every debt month by month to payoff
- compare avalanche and snowball on total interest
- work out spare cash for extra payments from a budget
- find recurring loan and card charges
- roll a cleared debt's payment onto the next one

## Example prompts
- build me an avalanche payoff plan for my debts
- compare avalanche and snowball, show the interest on each
- figure out how much I can pay above the minimums

# Debt Payoff Plan

## Overview
Helps you create a structured debt payoff plan using either the avalanche method (highest interest rate first) or snowball method (smallest balance first). Identifies your current debt payments, calculates extra payment capacity from your budget, and generates a month-by-month payoff schedule.

## Wilson Tools Used
- `transaction_search` — find recurring debt payments (loans, credit cards, lines of credit)
- `spending_summary` — calculate total income vs. expenses to find extra payment capacity

## Workflow
1. Run `transaction_search` with `query: "payment OR loan OR credit card OR interest OR minimum"` and `months: 3` to identify recurring debt payments.
2. Group the results by creditor/lender to determine your current monthly payment for each debt.
3. Ask the user to provide for each debt: current balance, interest rate (APR), and minimum payment. Wilson cannot determine balances from transactions alone.
4. Run `spending_summary` for the last 3 months to calculate average monthly income and average monthly expenses.
5. Compute extra payment capacity: `(average monthly income) - (average monthly expenses) - (sum of minimum payments already in expenses)`. If this is negative, flag that the user is overspending.
6. Generate an **Avalanche Plan** — order debts by interest rate descending. Apply all extra payment capacity to the highest-rate debt while paying minimums on all others.
7. Generate a **Snowball Plan** — order debts by balance ascending. Apply all extra payment capacity to the smallest balance while paying minimums on all others.
8. For each plan, produce a month-by-month schedule in this format:

   ```
   Month | Debt Name     | Payment | Principal | Interest | Remaining Balance
   ------+---------------+---------+-----------+----------+------------------
   1     | Credit Card A | $350    | $320.83   | $29.17   | $1,679.17
   1     | Student Loan  | $150    | $112.50   | $37.50   | $14,887.50
   ```

9. Calculate and display: total months to payoff, total interest paid, and total cost for each method.
10. Compare the two methods side by side and recommend the one that saves more in interest (avalanche) or provides faster psychological wins (snowball).

## Without Wilson
1. List all your debts in a spreadsheet with columns: Creditor, Balance, APR, Minimum Payment.
2. Calculate your monthly extra payment: check your bank statement, sum income deposits, subtract all non-debt expenses. Whatever remains beyond minimum payments is your extra payment.
