# dd-apm

A skill for Datadog APM work: agent install, auto-instrumentation, trace digging and queue monitoring. Useful when the service is already in Datadog and you forgot where to start.

## What it does

The skill routes requests. Mention Kubernetes, EKS, GKE, helm or a DatadogAgent CR and the agent reads the cluster SSI instructions. A single host, VM or EC2 with no orchestrator goes down the linux branch. Service renaming and Data Streams Monitoring get their own routes.

It is a tree of sub-skills, not one file: `k8s-ssi/agent-install`, `enable-ssi`, `verify-ssi`, `service-remapping`, `enable-dsm`. Every route ships with an anti-pattern that looks fine and fails quietly. A plain `helm install datadog datadog/datadog` does not support SSI through the DatadogAgent CR, and `ddtrace-run` in your code is pointless under SSI — auto-instrumentation needs no app changes.

For data queries the skill runs `pup` commands: `pup apm services list`, `pup traces search`, `pup apm flow-map`. You need Datadog Labs Pup installed and a session from `pup auth login`. The env tag it tells you to confirm with the user first rather than assume prod. DSM turns on with one setting per service, but the skill makes you say up front that it is billed separately on base APM.

## Requirements
- Works with: Datadog

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill dd-apm -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dd-apm/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dd-apm/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill dd-apm -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dd-apm/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill dd-apm -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dd-apm/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install datadog-labs/agent-skills dd-apm
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dd-apm/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill dd-apm -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/datadog-labs/agent-skills --path dd-apm
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dd-apm/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadog-labs/agent-skills --skill dd-apm -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/datadog-labs/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/dd-apm/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install the Datadog Agent on a cluster with SSI auto-instrumentation
- enable SSI on a single host or EC2 with no orchestrator
- rename a service in Datadog without shipping a new deploy
- find slow traces for a service above a duration threshold
- turn on queue lag monitoring between services

## Example prompts
- install Datadog APM on EKS with SSI
- my service shows up under the wrong name in Datadog, fix it
- enable DSM for a Kafka flow between my services

# Datadog APM

Distributed tracing, service maps, and performance analysis.

## Routing — Read This First

Match the user's request to one of the entries below. Each entry has the same shape: **triggers** → which sub-skill to load → the anti-pattern to avoid. If a request seems to fit more than one entry, see "Overlap disambiguation". If nothing matches, see "None of the above" at the end.

---

**Kubernetes APM install / instrument / onboard** — trigger when the user mentions Kubernetes, K8s, EKS, GKE, AKS, kind, minikube, K3s, helm, DatadogAgent CR, kubectl, SSI on a cluster, pod injection, or init containers.

**Immediately read** `.claude/skills/dd-apm/k8s-ssi/agent-install/SKILL.md` now, then `.claude/skills/dd-apm/k8s-ssi/enable-ssi/SKILL.md`, then `.claude/skills/dd-apm/k8s-ssi/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — do not proceed from memory.

> **Common wrong approaches that LOOK like they work but silently fail:**
> - `helm install datadog datadog/datadog` — the standard chart does NOT support SSI via DatadogAgent CR.
> - Adding `ddtrace` imports or `ddtrace-run` to the app — SSI auto-instruments WITHOUT any code changes.
> - `admission.datadoghq.com/enabled` annotations — that's admission controller config injection, not SSI init container injection.

---

**Linux APM install / instrument / onboard** — trigger when the user mentions a single host, VM, EC2 instance, bare-metal, RHEL/Ubuntu/Debian, systemd, or no orchestrator.

**Immediately read** `.claude/skills/dd-apm/linux-ssi/agent-install/SKILL.md` now, then `.claude/skills/dd-apm/linux-ssi/enable-ssi/SKILL.md`, then `.claude/skills/dd-apm/linux-ssi/verify-ssi/SKILL.md` — do not proceed from memory.

> **Do NOT** install the agent via plain `apt-get install datadog-agent` (or yum equivalent) and assume SSI follows — host auto-instrumentation requires the install script with the SSI flags, which the sub-skill walks through.

---

**Service rename / service remapping** — trigger when the user mentions renaming a service, collapsing multiple service names, stripping suffixes/prefixes, or cleaning up inferred services.
