# terraform-skill

Works out why terraform plan says "No changes" while the site is down, and keeps a rollout from touching someone else's service on a shared host.

## What it does

This skill is for anyone shipping infrastructure through Terraform who has already seen the weird case: clean plan, dead production. It routes the task first — release and shared gateway, environment isolation, pre-deploy checks, fresh-host bootstrap — and opens a matching reference file for each. Known failures come as symptom, interpretation, diagnosis, recovery.

The idea it pushes through every write-up: `No changes` is not a live-health check. Terraform refreshes provider-managed attributes, and the files or containers a provisioner leaves behind are not represented there. So the skill wants the exact candidate bytes validated before the first live write, and every other writer of that directory inventoried. A validator attached to one writer will not stop the second one.

On provisioners the stance is blunt. Exhaust the purpose-built options first: provider resources, image baking, cloud-init, configuration management. If `remote-exec`, `local-exec` or `file` stays necessary, spell out the artifact, target, lock, validation and readback. It also asks for one required-key schema across staging and production. Values may differ; whether a key is required may not.

## Requirements
- Works with: Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill terraform-skill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/terraform-skill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/terraform-skill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill terraform-skill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/terraform-skill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill terraform-skill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/terraform-skill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills terraform-skill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/terraform-skill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill terraform-skill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path terraform-skill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/terraform-skill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill terraform-skill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/terraform-skill/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trace a clean plan against a service that is actually down
- validate candidate bytes before the first live write
- inventory every writer of the target runtime
- keep staging and production on one required-key schema
- bootstrap a fresh host with an empty data disk

## Example prompts
- figure out why `terraform plan` says No changes but the site is down
- review my plan/apply wrapper for release safety
- production dies with `port is already allocated` after a clean staging run — what should I check

# Terraform Release and Provisioner Safety

Prevent a valid-looking Terraform workflow from publishing unvalidated bytes or widening a change's
blast radius. Keep the user's business outcome and the actual mutation surface ahead of plan counts,
green wrappers, or process completeness.

## Route the task

- Release, shared gateway, saved plan, staging receipt, or production promotion: read
  [release-safety-and-environment-parity.md](references/release-safety-and-environment-parity.md)
  and [pre-deploy-validation.md](references/pre-deploy-validation.md) before approval or mutation.
- Environment isolation, including cached initialization, environment retirement, shared data backend, DNS ownership, state, or snapshots: read
  [multi-env-isolation.md](references/multi-env-isolation.md).
- Pre-deploy checks or a validator: read
  [pre-deploy-validation.md](references/pre-deploy-validation.md).
- Fresh instance or empty data disk: read
  [zero-to-deploy-checklist.md](references/zero-to-deploy-checklist.md).
- One known provisioner symptom: use the matching pattern below.

## Operating contract

1. Use the repository's canonical release entry. When shared-gateway publication requires standard
   CI, agents may initiate that CI within existing authorization; normal release, restoration,
   rollback, and static-content transfer all use its controlled executor and existing wrappers.
   Do not substitute a local Terraform apply, root SSH/SCP, helper, or console write. Verify the
   implemented workflow and supported inputs before dispatch; lint or image-build CI alone is not a
   deployment lane. A missing lane blocks the live write, not preparation or read-only diagnosis.
2. Prefer provider resources, image baking, cloud-init, or configuration management. HashiCorp
   recommends exhausting purpose-built alternatives because Terraform cannot model provisioner side
   effects predictably. When a provisioner remains necessary, make its artifact, target, lock,
