# datapackage

This skill reads a Frictionless Data Package descriptor and tells you which tables and columns a dataset has, how to load it, and what warnings its metadata carries.

## What it does

A `datapackage.json` describes a set of tabular resources: name, file path, column list with descriptions, primary keys and foreign keys. The skill queries it piece by piece instead of loading it whole. That matters, because a descriptor can cover hundreds of resources and run to megabytes of JSON — pulling all of it into context burns the window for nothing.

Extraction runs through `jq`. Before touching metadata the skill checks that `jq` is present and points to an install line: `brew install jq` on macOS, `sudo apt install jq` on Linux, `winget install jqlang.jq` on Windows. Querying the actual data needs the `attach-db` and `query` skills from `duckdb/duckdb-skills`; without them you can still read metadata but not reach the files. The `frictionless` CLI with `fastparquet` is optional, for validating a package against its schema.

Warnings get their own step. Resource descriptions often carry caveats about data quality and processing, and the skill surfaces those before showing you a table. Before any join or aggregation it looks up `schema.primaryKey` and `schema.foreignKeys` rather than matching on a similarly named column. It will not start loading data on its own — files are large and remote reads are slow, so it asks first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --skill datapackage -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/datapackage/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/datapackage/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --skill datapackage -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/datapackage/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --skill datapackage -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/datapackage/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills datapackage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/datapackage/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --skill datapackage -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --path skills/datapackage
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/datapackage/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add catalyst-cooperative/agent-skills --skill datapackage -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- find out which tables and columns a dataset contains
- pull field descriptions and primary keys from the descriptor
- check data quality warnings before running a query
- figure out how to load Parquet, DuckDB, SQLite or CSV files the descriptor points to
- verify foreign keys before joining two resources

## Example prompts
- show me what resources are in datapackage.json
- what columns does this table have and what do they mean
- are there any usage warnings for this resource

  Explore and query any dataset annotated with a Frictionless Data Package descriptor

  resources a dataset contains, look up column names and descriptions, surface usage
  warnings embedded in metadata, or understand how to load data from Parquet files,
  DuckDB or SQLite databases, or CSV files described by a datapackage.json. Also use
  when the user has a datapackage.json and wants to know what's in it, how to query it

  dataset-specific skills (like `pudl`) that layer domain knowledge on top.

# Frictionless Data Package Guide

This skill covers any dataset described by a
[Frictionless Data Package](https://datapackage.org/) descriptor file
(`datapackage.json`). It is intentionally generic — it works for any conforming
datapackage, regardless of who published it or what the data contains.

For PUDL-specific knowledge (S3 bucket paths, table tier conventions, data source
context, usage warnings), also use the `pudl` skill on top of this one.

## What is a datapackage.json?

A `datapackage.json` is a JSON file that describes a collection of tabular data
resources. Each resource represents one table (or file) and includes:

- `name`: machine-readable identifier
- `description`: human-readable description, often including processing notes, primary
    keys, and usage warnings
- `path`: filename or URL of the actual data file
- `schema.fields`: list of columns, each with a `name` and `description`
- `schema.primaryKey`: the field or fields that uniquely identify a row in this resource
- `schema.foreignKeys`: declared links from this resource's fields to another
    resource's primary key — check these before joining or aggregating (see
    [Metadata Querying](./references/metadata-querying.md))

The file can be large (hundreds of resources, megabytes of JSON). Always query it
