## What it does

The `databases` skill keeps two references side by side: document-oriented MongoDB and relational PostgreSQL. Eight reference files cover MongoDB CRUD and query operators, aggregation pipelines, indexing and Atlas, plus PostgreSQL SELECT with JOINs and CTEs, window functions, `psql` usage, `EXPLAIN` reading, user management and replication. A comparison table lines up data model, schema, query language, transactions and scaling.

Three Python scripts live in `scripts/`. `db_migrate.py` generates and applies migrations for either database, `db_backup.py` handles backup and restore, `db_performance_check.py` looks for slow queries and suggests indexes. They run from the command line with flags such as `--db mongodb` or `--db postgres`, so Python has to be installed.

The skill also helps pick a database for the job. MongoDB fits when the schema shifts often or you need to shard across servers; PostgreSQL fits when ACID transactions and many-to-many relationships matter. Both handle JSON, full-text search and geospatial queries. If your project already runs on a strict schema with SQL reporting, reaching for MongoDB just for flexibility is the wrong trade.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL, MongoDB

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill databases -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/databases/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/databases/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill databases -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/databases/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill databases -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/databases/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mrgoonie/claudekit-skills databases
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/databases/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill databases -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --path .claude/skills/databases
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/databases/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mrgoonie/claudekit-skills --skill databases -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pick between MongoDB and PostgreSQL for a new service
- build an aggregation pipeline instead of chaining manual queries
- design a compound index for a frequent filter
- generate and apply a schema migration
- trace a slow query and decide which index to add

## Example prompts
- help me design a schema for a storefront: MongoDB or PostgreSQL?
- write an aggregation pipeline for orders grouped by day
- read the EXPLAIN output and suggest indexes

# Databases Skill

Unified guide for working with MongoDB (document-oriented) and PostgreSQL (relational) databases. Choose the right database for your use case and master both systems.

## When to Use This Skill

Use when:
- Designing database schemas and data models
- Writing queries (SQL or MongoDB query language)
- Building aggregation pipelines or complex joins
- Optimizing indexes and query performance
- Implementing database migrations
- Setting up replication, sharding, or clustering
- Configuring backups and disaster recovery
- Managing database users and permissions
- Analyzing slow queries and performance issues
- Administering production database deployments

## Database Selection Guide

### Choose MongoDB When:
- Schema flexibility: frequent structure changes, heterogeneous data
- Document-centric: natural JSON/BSON data model
- Horizontal scaling: need to shard across multiple servers
- High write throughput: IoT, logging, real-time analytics
- Nested/hierarchical data: embedded documents preferred
- Rapid prototyping: schema evolution without migrations

**Best for:** Content management, catalogs, IoT time series, real-time analytics, mobile apps, user profiles

### Choose PostgreSQL When:
- Strong consistency: ACID transactions critical
- Complex relationships: many-to-many joins, referential integrity
- SQL requirement: team expertise, reporting tools, BI systems
- Data integrity: strict schema validation, constraints
- Mature ecosystem: extensive tooling, extensions
- Complex queries: window functions, CTEs, analytical workloads

**Best for:** Financial systems, e-commerce transactions, ERP, CRM, data warehousing, analytics

### Both Support:
- JSON/JSONB storage and querying
- Full-text search capabilities
- Geospatial queries and indexing
- Replication and high availability
- ACID transactions (MongoDB 4.0+)
- Strong security features

## Quick Start

### MongoDB Setup

```bash
# Atlas (Cloud) - Recommended
# 1. Sign up at mongodb.com/atlas
# 2. Create M0 free cluster
# 3. Get connection string
# Connection
