# database-testing

A skill for database testing: checks migrations forward and backward, schema constraints, seed data and query plans. Useful when a migration passes but drops data anyway.

## What it does

The skill covers what usually slips through: a migration applies cleanly but silently drops a column, and an `EXPLAIN` assertion stays green after the index is gone. It gives you patterns for forward and backward migration tests, constraint-rejection tests, deterministic seed data, drift detection, and query-plan assertions that actually fail when the index disappears.

It covers PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB with Prisma, TypeORM, Drizzle and SQLAlchemy, plus Testcontainers test databases. Prisma gets its own section: there is no `migrate down` command, and `prisma migrate resolve --rolled-back` is not a rollback tool — it only fixes a migration whose deploy failed. So the reverse path needs a hand-written `down.sql` per migration: apply forward, capture state, run `psql -f down.sql`, assert the object is gone, re-apply. TypeORM and Sequelize ship native revert commands, and those swap in for the `psql` step.

Before starting, the skill suggests checking `.agents/qa-project-context.md` for database type, ORM, migration tooling and environment config. For Drizzle Kit v1.0, still in beta, it suggests pinning the exact version in CI because the API shifts between betas. Drift is caught with `prisma migrate diff` and `--exit-code` — a fast pre-flight before the heavier tests.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill database-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill database-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill database-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills database-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill database-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/database-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill database-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/database-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- A migration applies fine but silently drops column data — the reverse path was never tested.
- A query-plan assertion that can never fail lets a query through after it loses its index.
- Seed data with `uuid()` and `now()` makes tests non-deterministic.
- Someone edits the schema without a migration, so committed migrations no longer reproduce `schema.prisma`.

## Example prompts
- Ask the skill to test migrations both ways: “test this migration and its rollback”.
- Hand it a constraint check: “verify that `NOT NULL` and `UNIQUE` reject bad data”.
- Ask it to wire migration drift detection into CI.

<objective>
A migration that passes `prisma migrate deploy` can still silently drop a column's data, and an `EXPLAIN` assertion that never fails will green-light a query that lost its index — both ship to production looking fine. This skill produces database tests that catch those: forward AND backward migration tests, constraint-rejection tests, deterministic seed data, drift detection, and query-plan assertions that actually fail when the index disappears.

**Before starting:** check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` for database type, ORM, migration tooling, and environment config — they shape every pattern below.

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first — if it exists, use it and skip anything already answered there. Then:

1. **Database type:** PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, or multi-database? Each has different constraint syntax, migration tools, and performance profiling.
2. **ORM / query builder:** Prisma, TypeORM, Drizzle, Sequelize, SQLAlchemy, Django ORM, or raw SQL? The ORM determines migration tooling and test patterns.
3. **Migration tool:** Prisma Migrate, TypeORM migrations, Flyway, Liquibase, Alembic, knex, or custom? This determines how to test forward and backward migrations.
