# Database Sync

A skill for database synchronization: replication, schema migration and data movement across PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB and Redis. Useful when two stores need to stay in step.

## What it does

Database Sync lays out the sync patterns: one-way replication, bi-directional, and hub-and-spoke. You pick the method by task — full refresh, incremental sync on `updated_at`, CDC, or a point-in-time snapshot. For incremental mode the skill covers change tracking through timestamps, triggers and PostgreSQL logical replication.

Configuration lives in YAML: source and target with database type, host, port and a secret reference, plus sync settings for batch size, parallel tables and retries. Table mappings handle column renames, transforms like `UPPER(status)` and row filters. Conflicts get resolved by last-write-wins, source priority, field merge or custom per-column rules, and the conflict log writes to a `sync_conflicts` table.

The skill runs on the `data-mcp` MCP server with `postgres_sync`, `mysql_replicate`, `mongodb_sync` and `redis_cache` tools. Without it nothing fires, so wire up the server before you start. One caveat: full sync needs downtime and heavy resources, which is reason enough to rehearse on a copy of a production database first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill database-sync -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-sync/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-sync/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill database-sync -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-sync/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill database-sync -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-sync/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install claude-office-skills/skills database-sync
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-sync/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill database-sync -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills --path database-sync
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-sync/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill database-sync -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/database-sync/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- move tables from PostgreSQL to MySQL with renamed columns
- set up incremental replication on `updated_at` without a full reload
- resolve conflicts in bi-directional sync between two databases
- take a point-in-time snapshot for analytics or reporting
- log mismatches and alert when conflicts spike

## Example prompts
- Set up sync from PostgreSQL `production` to MySQL `analytics`, incremental mode, batch size 10000
- Map the `users` table to `dim_users` with the status column uppercased
- Build a CDC config for the `orders` and `products` tables using logical replication
