## What it does

This skill provides guidelines and reference patterns for relational data modeling. It helps the agent set up clean tables, assign correct data types, and define constraints and foreign keys.

Included reference guides cover first, second, and third normal forms (1NF, 2NF, 3NF), along with 1:1, 1:N, and N:N relationship patterns. Quick-start examples illustrate how to split repeating groups into dedicated child tables with `ON DELETE CASCADE`.

The material targets PostgreSQL and MySQL syntax. Projects relying on non-relational document stores will need different modeling principles.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-schema-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-schema-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-schema-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-schema-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-schema-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-schema-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-schema-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts database-schema-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-schema-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-schema-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/database-schema-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-schema-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-schema-design -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- design new relational database schemas from scratch
- normalize database tables to 1NF, 2NF, or 3NF
- define foreign key constraints and cascade rules
- configure one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many relationships

## Example prompts
- Design a PostgreSQL orders schema separating items into an `order_items` table in 1NF.
- Review my existing MySQL tables and suggest changes to reach 3NF.
- Plan a many-to-many relationship schema between users and permissions with foreign keys.

## Overview

Design scalable, normalized database schemas with proper relationships, constraints, and data types. Includes normalization techniques, relationship patterns, and constraint strategies.

## When to Use

- New database schema design
- Data model planning
- Table structure definition
- Relationship design (1:1, 1:N, N:N)
- Normalization analysis
- Constraint and trigger planning
- Performance optimization at schema level

## Quick Start

**PostgreSQL - Eliminate Repeating Groups:**

```sql
-- NOT 1NF: repeating group in single column
CREATE TABLE orders_bad (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
  customer_name VARCHAR(255),
  product_ids VARCHAR(255)  -- "1,2,3" - repeating group
);
-- 1NF: separate table for repeating data
CREATE TABLE orders (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
  customer_name VARCHAR(255),
  created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NOW()
);
CREATE TABLE order_items (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
  order_id UUID NOT NULL,
  product_id UUID NOT NULL,
  quantity INTEGER NOT NULL,
  FOREIGN KEY (order_id) REFERENCES orders(id) ON DELETE CASCADE
);
```

| [First Normal Form (1NF)](references/first-normal-form-1nf.md) | First Normal Form (1NF) |
| [Second Normal Form (2NF)](references/second-normal-form-2nf.md) | Second Normal Form (2NF) |

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Follow established patterns and conventions
- Write clean, maintainable code
- Add appropriate documentation
- Test thoroughly before deploying

### ❌ DON'T

- Skip testing or validation
- Ignore error handling
- Hard-code configuration values
