## What it does

This skill provides SQL templates and patterns for schema tracking. It introduces tracking tables like `schema_migrations` and `migration_logs` to log versions, execution time, and checksums.

The bundled guides cover column renaming, safe schema additions, and non-blocking index creation. They target PostgreSQL and MySQL deployments. Without DDL execution privileges on your database, these migration scripts cannot run.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-migration-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/database-migration-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-migration-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-migration-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts database-migration-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-migration-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/database-migration-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill database-migration-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/database-migration-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create database indexes without locking production tables
- track applied migrations with checksums and execution times
- plan rollback workflows for schema modifications
- rename or add columns in PostgreSQL and MySQL safely

## Example prompts
- Write a non-blocking index creation script for PostgreSQL
- Set up the schema_migrations tracking table and record function
- Generate a safe column rename migration with rollback steps

## Overview

Implement robust database migration systems with version control, rollback capabilities, and data transformation strategies. Includes migration frameworks and production deployment patterns.

## When to Use

- Schema versioning and evolution
- Data transformations and cleanup
- Adding/removing tables and columns
- Index creation and optimization
- Migration testing and validation
- Rollback planning and execution
- Multi-environment deployments

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```sql
-- Create migrations tracking table
CREATE TABLE schema_migrations (
  version BIGINT PRIMARY KEY,
  name VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL,
  executed_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
  duration_ms INTEGER,
  checksum VARCHAR(64)
);
-- Create migration log table
CREATE TABLE migration_logs (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  version BIGINT NOT NULL,
  status VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
  error_message TEXT,
  rolled_back_at TIMESTAMP,
  executed_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
);
-- Function to record migration
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION record_migration(
  p_version BIGINT,
  p_name VARCHAR,
  p_duration_ms INTEGER
) RETURNS void AS $$
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Follow established patterns and conventions
- Write clean, maintainable code
- Add appropriate documentation
- Test thoroughly before deploying

### ❌ DON'T

- Skip testing or validation
- Ignore error handling
- Hard-code configuration values
