## What it does

The skill kicks in on prompts that mention "data viz", "chart", "graph", "dashboard", "plot", "Recharts", "Nivo" or "D3". From there the agent picks a library through a decision tree: Observable Plot for exploratory work, Recharts for standard bars and lines, Nivo when the chart should look good out of the box, Visx or plain D3 for one-off pieces like Sankey diagrams and network graphs, Tremor and shadcn-ui Charts for Tailwind dashboards.

Inside you get a Tufte checklist, a write-up of the New York Times graphics workflow, and notes on animation and color. Those live in reference files: `references/tufte-principles.md`, `references/nyt-workflow.md`, `references/animation-patterns.md`. Motion advice leans on spring physics through `framer-motion`, with a check for `prefers-reduced-motion`.

The skill states outright that it is not for static PNG or SVG exports, print graphics or basic HTML tables, so it will decline that work. Its tool list is capped at `Read,Write,Edit,Bash`, which means no image generation. And the whole stack it describes is React-shaped — a Vue or Svelte codebase gets nothing from it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill data-viz-2025 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/data-viz-2025/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill data-viz-2025 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill data-viz-2025 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills data-viz-2025
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill data-viz-2025 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/data-viz-2025
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill data-viz-2025 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/data-viz-2025/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a charting library for a specific React task
- build a Tailwind dashboard without hand-rolling axes and legends
- draw a Sankey or network graph that has no ready component
- strip gridlines and labels so a chart actually reads
- animate transitions when the data updates

## Example prompts
- Build a sales dashboard with Recharts and a month filter, styled with Tailwind
- I need a Sankey of user flows between screens — recommend a library and write the component
- Audit my chart against the Tufte checklist and cut the clutter

# Data Visualization 2025: The Art & Science of Visual Communication

Create visualizations that Seaborn users, Tufte readers, and everyone else will love. Marry NYT Graphics rigor with MoMA aesthetics, Nike energy, and On Kawara precision.

## When to Use This Skill

✅ **Use for:**
- Building interactive charts, dashboards, and data stories
- Complex visualizations (chord diagrams, Sankey flows, network graphs)
- Real-time data displays with animations
- Mobile-responsive data components
- Accessible, tested visualizations for production

❌ **NOT for:**
- Static PNG/SVG exports without interaction (use design tools)
- Basic HTML tables (use semantic markup)
- Print-only graphics (different constraints)
- Simple icon displays (use icon libraries)

## Core Philosophy: The Three Pillars

### 1. **Clarity** (Tufte's Data-Ink Ratio)
Every visual element must earn its place. Remove chart junk, maximize signal-to-noise.

### 2. **Beauty** (Aesthetic Standards)
Visualizations are art. Use spring physics, thoughtful color, and premium design systems.

### 3. **Truth** (Graphical Integrity)
Data representation must be honest. Test rigorously, document assumptions, preserve context.

## Quick Decision Tree

```
What are you building?
├─ Exploratory analysis / many iterations
│  └─ → Observable Plot (grammar-of-graphics)
│
├─ Standard business charts (bars, lines, pies)
