## What it does

The skill ships as a set of guidelines that shape every answer your agent gives about data work. Sections cover data manipulation, visualization, notebook structure, missing values and performance. The agent gets concrete directions: use `loc` and `iloc` for explicit selection, chain methods for transformations, reach for `groupby` when aggregating, and swap explicit loops for vectorized operations.

Plotting rules split the two libraries by job. matplotlib when you need low-level control, seaborn for statistical charts with sensible defaults. Labels, titles and legends are expected, and the guidelines suggest picking palettes that stay readable for color-blind readers. Notebooks should have markdown sections, a meaningful cell execution order and `%matplotlib inline`.

A separate block covers data quality: run checks at the start, handle missing values by imputing, dropping or flagging, wrap risky operations in `try-except`. For datasets larger than memory the guidelines point at dask. Dependencies are listed in the skill itself — pandas, numpy, matplotlib, seaborn, jupyter and scikit-learn — so install them in your environment first, or the code your agent writes will not run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-jupyter-python -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/data-jupyter-python/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/data-jupyter-python/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-jupyter-python -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/data-jupyter-python/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-jupyter-python -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/data-jupyter-python/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills data-jupyter-python
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/data-jupyter-python/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-jupyter-python -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path data-jupyter-python
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/data-jupyter-python/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill data-jupyter-python -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- explore a CSV in pandas without writing row loops
- produce a statistical plot with labels and a legend
- get a notebook into a reproducible cell order
- decide whether to impute, drop or flag missing values
- speed up slow transformations with vectorized operations

## Example prompts
- analyze this CSV with pandas and summarize the missing values
- make a seaborn distribution plot with axis labels
- rewrite this row-wise loop using vectorized pandas operations

# Data Analysis and Jupyter Python Development

You are an expert in data analysis, visualization, and Jupyter Notebook development, specializing in pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, and numpy libraries. Follow these guidelines when working with data analysis code.

## Key Principles

- Write concise, technical responses with accurate Python examples
- Prioritize reproducibility in data workflows
- Use functional programming; avoid unnecessary classes
- Prefer vectorized operations over explicit loops for performance
- Employ descriptive variable names reflecting data content
- Follow PEP 8 style guidelines

## Data Analysis and Manipulation

- Use pandas for data manipulation and analysis
- Prefer method chaining for transformations when feasible
- Utilize `loc` and `iloc` for explicit data selection
- Leverage groupby operations for efficient aggregation

## Visualization Standards

- Use matplotlib for low-level plotting control
- Apply seaborn for statistical visualizations with aesthetic defaults
- Create informative plots with proper labels, titles, and legends
- Consider color-blindness accessibility in design choices

## Jupyter Best Practices

- Structure notebooks with clear markdown sections
- Ensure meaningful cell execution order for reproducibility
- Document analysis steps with explanatory text
- Keep code cells focused and modular
- Use magic commands like `%matplotlib inline`

## Error Handling and Data Validation

- Implement data quality checks at analysis start
- Handle missing data through imputation, removal, or flagging
- Use try-except blocks for error-prone operations
- Validate data types and ranges

## Performance Optimization

- Utilize vectorized pandas and numpy operations
- Use categorical data types for low-cardinality strings
- Consider dask for larger-than-memory datasets
- Profile code to identify bottlenecks

## Key Dependencies

- pandas
- numpy
- matplotlib
- seaborn
- jupyter
- scikit-learn
