# data-analysis

Reads Excel and CSV files, runs the statistics, spots patterns, and suggests charts and formulas. Useful when you need to make sense of a table fast.

## What it does

The skill takes `xlsx`, `csv` and `xls` files. You hand over a spreadsheet and say what you want to know; the output is a markdown report with a data overview, key insights, visualizations and recommendations. The overview covers row and column counts, the date range, a per-column summary, and data quality issues such as missing values and likely duplicates.

Four kinds of work sit inside. Exploratory analysis answers questions like which patterns show up in the data. Targeted questions compute revenue by region or growth by product. The skill also writes Excel and Google Sheets formulas, explains each argument, and tells you which cell to drop the result into. On top of that it picks a chart type for the job: line for trends, pie or donut for parts of a whole, histogram for distribution.

It needs the `office-mcp` MCP server with the `read_xlsx`, `analyze_spreadsheet`, `create_chart` and `pivot_table` tools. Without that server the skill cannot open your file, so check it first. Writing files and converting to JSON live in the optional `create_xlsx` and `xlsx_to_json` tools, and whether you have them depends on your server build.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill data-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/data-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/data-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill data-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/data-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill data-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/data-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install claude-office-skills/skills data-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/data-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill data-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills --path data-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/data-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill data-analysis -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/data-analysis/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- figure out what is actually inside someone else's spreadsheet
- break revenue down by region and product
- catch missing values and duplicates before reporting
- pick a chart type that fits the question
- build a conditional formula instead of recalculating by hand

## Example prompts
- Look at `sales.xlsx` and give me a dataset overview with data quality issues
- What was revenue by region this year? Show a table and a trend chart
- Write a year-over-year growth formula and explain the arguments
