# dashfix

Stops the agent from dropping typographic dashes into docs, READMEs and UI copy. Only the plain hyphen survives.

## What it does

dashfix fires whenever the agent writes or edits prose in a project: documentation, READMEs, UI strings, code comments, changelogs, commit messages. One rule across every language — the plain hyphen `-` (U+002D) is the only dash allowed. An em dash in a sentence reads as generated or autocorrected text.

Two modes. Write mode covers everything the agent produces while the skill sits in context, plus a single-file check before handoff: `rg -nP '[\x{2010}-\x{2015}\x{2212}]' <file>` lists every hit, you fix them and re-run. Audit mode runs on request and gives each occurrence its own verdict.

The fix is not always a hyphen. Where the dash hides a reason, result or contrast, the skill suggests a connecting word; an aside takes commas, a digression takes parentheses, a new point takes a period. Ranges of numbers and dates get an unspaced hyphen (`3-5`). One caveat worth knowing: a project style guide or an `AGENTS.md` line demanding typographic dashes counts as a conflict, not an exception — the skill names it in one line and keeps the hyphen unless you confirm the project rule.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentimony/skills --skill dashfix -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dashfix/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentimony/skills --skill dashfix -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentimony/skills --skill dashfix -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sentimony/skills dashfix
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentimony/skills --skill dashfix -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sentimony/skills --path plugins/writing/skills/dashfix
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sentimony/skills --skill dashfix -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sentimony/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/writing/skills/dashfix/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- strip em dashes from a README
- find every Unicode dash in one file
- normalise UI copy to plain hyphens
- check a freshly edited file before handoff
- classify each dash and pick the right replacement

## Example prompts
- clean the dashes in the README, keep plain hyphens only
- check `docs/guide.md` for typographic dashes and fix them
- audit dash usage across the project and tell me how each one gets fixed

# Dash Discipline

Keep project text free of typographic dashes: the plain hyphen (`-`, U+002D) is the only
dash this skill allows, in every language. A person typing on a keyboard gets U+002D from
the dash key in both the English and the Ukrainian layout; an em dash in prose is a mark
of generated or autocorrected text. The skill has two modes. Write mode covers everything
you write while the skill sits in context, including a single-file check before handoff.
Audit mode runs on request: inventory every occurrence and say how each one gets fixed.
Enforcement covers what neither mode guarantees on its own.

## Banned and allowed characters

| Character | Code point | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `-` hyphen-minus | U+002D | allowed, the only dash to write |
| `—` em dash | U+2014 | banned |
| `–` en dash | U+2013 | banned |
| `‐` `‑` `‒` `―` other Unicode hyphens and bars | U+2010, U+2011, U+2012, U+2015 | banned |
| `−` minus sign in prose | U+2212 | banned in prose; keep only where code or math treats it as a distinct symbol |

## Language scope

The rule is the same for every language, including those whose orthography calls for the
dash (Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, German). Language changes only the spacing of the fix:
a dash written with spaces around it becomes a hyphen with the same spaces
(`Ми — команда` becomes `Ми - команда`), because a hyphen glued to a word reads as part
of a compound. An unspaced dash between two words takes spaces too, unless it joins a
compound word (see Replacement).

When the user explicitly asks in the current session to keep the dashes in named files,
that request wins over this rule for those files only: report the exception in one line
and do not extend it to other files. A project document that asks for typographic dashes
(a style guide, an `AGENTS.md` line) is a conflict, not an exception: name it in one line
and keep the plain hyphen unless the user confirms the project rule.

## Write mode

Applies to every text you produce in any language: file edits, new files, commit
messages, PR descriptions, and your own replies.

- Never emit a banned dash. Write ` - ` where the dash would go, or the punctuation that
  states the relation better (see Replacement).
- Quoting external text or a log is no exception: write the hyphen, and say once that the
  quote was changed this way.
- Text whose subject is the dash character itself, like the character table of this
  skill, keeps the character it discusses.
