# otel-semantic-conventions

Picks and reviews telemetry attributes against the OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions spec. Useful when you need the right attribute name instead of inventing one.

## What it does

The skill covers how to select, place and validate telemetry attributes and metric instruments under the OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions spec. Three rule files ship with it: `attributes` for the registry, selection, placement and common attributes by domain (HTTP, DB, messaging, RPC); `versioning` for semconv versions, stability and migration; `dash0` for Dash0 derived attributes and feature dependencies.

The workflow is ordered. Search the attribute registry first, check stability second, then decide the level. Resource attributes describe the entity producing telemetry, span and log attributes describe a single operation. Don't duplicate across levels, and keep a given attribute at the same level in every service. Metric attribute values must stay low-cardinality, so user IDs and parameterised paths belong in span attributes. Skip that and storage and query cost climb.

Custom attributes are the last resort, only when no registry entry covers the concept, and they follow the `org.namespace.attribute_name` pattern. Span names, span kinds and span status codes are out of scope here — the skill points to `otel-instrumentation` for those. Install runs through `npx skills add` or `gh skill install`, with a separate `gemini skills install` command for Gemini CLI.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-semantic-conventions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-semantic-conventions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-semantic-conventions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dash0hq/agent-skills otel-semantic-conventions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-semantic-conventions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dash0hq/agent-skills --path skills/otel-semantic-conventions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-semantic-conventions -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dash0hq/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/otel-semantic-conventions/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the standard attribute name instead of a homemade one
- split attributes between resource and spans without duplicates
- keep high-cardinality values out of metric attributes
- migrate to a newer semconv version
- check whether instrumentation breaks the spec

## Example prompts
- Review the attributes on this span against semconv and suggest replacements
- My metric has a user.id attribute — what's wrong with it and where should it go?
- Help me migrate these attributes to the current semconv version

# OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions

This skill governs correct selection, placement, and validation of telemetry attributes and metric instruments according to the OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions specification.
For span naming, span kinds, and span status codes, see the [otel-instrumentation](../otel-instrumentation/) skill.

The [Attribute Registry](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/specs/semconv/registry/attributes/) is the single source of truth for all defined attributes.
