## What it does

The skill explains how to define receivers, processors, and exporters, connect them through `service.pipelines`, and send traces, metrics, and logs to Dash0. It covers OTLP, Prometheus, filelog, hostmetrics, exporter queues, and resource enrichment for Kubernetes or host metadata.

Its rules cover Helm, Operator, raw Kubernetes manifests, and Docker Compose deployments, along with sampling, RED metrics, and reduced Collector builds with OCB. You can validate a file with `otelcol validate --config=config.yaml`; a temporary `debug` exporter helps inspect whether telemetry reaches the pipeline.

The examples require Collector v0.153.0 or later, with v0.163.1 used when pinning an image. Without `memory_limiter`, a telemetry burst can exhaust memory and crash the Collector. The process also needs write access to `/var/lib/otelcol` when `file_storage` is used.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-collector -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/otel-collector/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-collector -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-collector -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dash0hq/agent-skills otel-collector
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-collector -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dash0hq/agent-skills --path skills/otel-collector
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dash0hq/agent-skills --skill otel-collector -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dash0hq/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/otel-collector/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build separate pipelines for traces, metrics, and logs
- forward OTLP telemetry to Dash0
- validate a Collector config before deployment
- choose a Kubernetes or Docker Compose deployment
- enrich signals with Kubernetes and host metadata

## Example prompts
- Configure a Collector that receives OTLP over gRPC and HTTP and exports telemetry to Dash0.
- Validate `config.yaml` with `otelcol validate`, then suggest a Kubernetes deployment method.
- Create separate traces, metrics, and logs pipelines with `memory_limiter` and a persistent exporter queue.

## Key principles

- **Processor ordering matters.**
  Place `memory_limiter` first in every pipeline.
  Enable exporter batching with `sending_queue: { batch: {} }` and persist the queue with `file_storage` instead of using the `batch` processor.
  Incorrect ordering causes memory exhaustion or data loss.
- **One pipeline per signal type.**
  Define separate pipelines for traces, metrics, and logs.
  Mixing signals in a single pipeline breaks processing and causes runtime errors.
- **Every declared component must appear in a pipeline.**
