# dark-mode-design-expert

A skill for dark mode UI work: atmospheric palettes, WCAG contrast rules and tokens that cover both light and dark schemes. Useful when a theme toggle must not hurt readability.

## What it does

The skill activates on phrases like "dark mode", "night mode", "prefers-color-scheme" and "OLED optimization", then walks the theme through three layers: raw colors, semantic tokens, component values. That structure lives in CSS variables, so primitives stay separate from purpose-driven names.

Its core stance is that dark surfaces should get lighter as they rise, and glow replaces shadow. Pure white on pure black is not the goal — 21:1 contrast strains the eyes more than a moderate ratio, so the skill aims for 12:1 to 16:1 on primary text. Body text needs at least 4.5:1, large text from 24px needs 3:1, and borders, icons and focus rings also need 3:1.

This is not a font picker or a general palette tool; the same collection covers those separately, and auditing specific color pairs is handed off to `color-contrast-auditor`. Install with `npx skills add`, and the skill file lands at `~/.claude/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill dark-mode-design-expert -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill dark-mode-design-expert -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill dark-mode-design-expert -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills dark-mode-design-expert
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill dark-mode-design-expert -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/dark-mode-design-expert
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill dark-mode-design-expert -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/dark-mode-design-expert/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a dark theme without a pure black background
- check text and icon contrast against WCAG 2.1
- wire up a light/dark toggle with `prefers-color-scheme`
- set up raised surfaces and glow instead of shadows
- cut battery draw on OLED screens

## Example prompts
- Build a dark theme for this dashboard: surfaces lighter as they rise, glow instead of shadows
- Check primary text contrast in the dark scheme — I want the 12:1 to 16:1 range
- Add a light/dark toggle with `prefers-color-scheme` and semantic tokens

## The Science of Dark Mode

### Why Dark Mode Exists

| Factor | Light Mode | Dark Mode | Winner |
|--------|------------|-----------|--------|
| **OLED Battery** | 100% baseline | 39-47% savings at max brightness | Dark |
| **Low Light Comfort** | Eye strain, fatigue | Reduced glare | Dark |
| **Bright Environment** | Better readability | Washed out | Light |
| **Astigmatism Users** | Easier to read | Halation effect | Light |
| **Focus/Immersion** | Standard | Content pops forward | Dark |
| **Sleep Hygiene** | Blue light exposure | Reduced blue light | Dark |

**Key Insight:** Dark mode isn't universally better—it's contextually better. The best systems respect user preference AND adapt to environment.

### Contrast Requirements (WCAG 2.1)

| Element Type | Minimum Ratio | Target Ratio | Notes |
