## What it does

The skill walks your specs and flags what makes them flaky: fixed `cy.wait(<number>)` delays, command return values assigned to variables, `async/await`, `{ force: true }`, chaining after actions, a one-shot `expect()` inside `.then()`, conditional testing. It also marks APIs removed across Cypress 12 to 16, among them `Cypress.env()`, `cy.exec()`, `cy.server()` and `cy.route()`. A zero-dependency Node.js scanner ships inside, and it does not need Cypress installed.

The scanner reads the Cypress version from the nearest `package.json`, so removed APIs come back graded `error` when the installed major already rejects them and `warn` when they break on upgrade. Run it as `node ./scripts/scan-cypress.mjs <project-root>`, with `--json`, `--strict` and `--list-rules` available. Findings are heuristic, so open each location and confirm before editing.

Before touching code, the skill has you measure how often the spec fails. Without a baseline you cannot tell a fix from luck. Node.js 18 or later is required. A fixed wait is not deleted but swapped for the condition it stood in for: an intercept, a DOM assertion, or `cy.clock()` with `cy.tick(ms)`. Raising `defaultCommandTimeout`, adding `retries` or slapping on `{ force: true }` is off the table, because each turns a visible failure into a hidden one.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install github/awesome-copilot cypress-flake-fixer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md`

### Claude Code

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add github/awesome-copilot --skill cypress-flake-fixer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot --path skills/cypress-flake-fixer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/skills/cypress-flake-fixer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- strip fixed `cy.wait(<number>)` delays from specs
- track down "detached from the DOM" errors
- find APIs removed in Cypress 12 through 16
- get a suite ready for a Cypress 15 or 16 upgrade
- separate test flake from a real application bug

## Example prompts
- scan cypress/e2e/checkout.cy.ts and list the findings
- replace the fixed waits in this spec with the conditions they were covering
- check the suite for APIs removed in Cypress 16

# Cypress Flake Fixer

Audit an existing Cypress suite for the code patterns that cause intermittent failures, then fix them without hiding the problem behind retries, longer timeouts, or `force: true`.

## When to Use This Skill

- A Cypress spec passes locally and fails in CI, or fails once in every few runs
- The suite contains `cy.wait(<number>)`, `{ force: true }`, or tests that only pass in order
- Errors mention "detached from the DOM", "timed out retrying", or a subject that "is no longer attached"
- The project is upgrading Cypress across a major version (12 through 16)
- A review of Cypress test code is requested

For writing new Cypress tests from scratch, coding standards are enough. This skill is for diagnosing and repairing an existing suite.

## Prerequisites

- Node.js 18 or later to run the scanner (it has no dependencies and does not need Cypress installed)
- The Cypress version, read from `package.json`. Fixes differ by major version

## Workflow

### 1. Scan

```bash
node ./scripts/scan-cypress.mjs <project-root>
node ./scripts/scan-cypress.mjs <project-root> --json          # machine-readable
node ./scripts/scan-cypress.mjs <project-root> --strict        # add low-confidence rules
node ./scripts/scan-cypress.mjs cypress/e2e/checkout.cy.ts     # one file
```

The scanner reads the Cypress version from the nearest `package.json` and grades removed APIs as `error` when the installed major already rejects them and `warn` when they break on upgrade. Run `--list-rules` for the catalog.

Findings are heuristic. Open each location and confirm before editing.

### 2. Measure before changing anything

When the goal is to fix a specific flaky spec, record how often it fails first. Without a baseline there is no way to tell a fix from luck.

```bash
for i in $(seq 1 20); do npx cypress run --spec "cypress/e2e/checkout.cy.ts" --quiet || echo "FAIL $i"; done
```

A spec that fails 1 run in 10 needs about 30 clean runs after the fix before the fix is believable.

### 3. Fix in this order

| Order | Rules | Why first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | CY002, CY003, CY007 graded `error` | The test is wrong or already broken; other fixes build on correct command flow |
