## What it does

The `customize` skill from `microsoft/skills` runs an interactive deployment flow for Azure OpenAI models. It starts by checking your session with `az account show` and asking for `az login` if needed, then reads `PROJECT_RESOURCE_ID` or prompts you for it. From there you pick the model, version, SKU, capacity, RAI policy and advanced options.

The flow has 14 phases, ending with `az cognitiveservices account deployment create` and status polling. Accept every default — latest version, GlobalStandard SKU, recommended capacity, `Microsoft.DefaultV2` policy — and you are done in about five interactions. SKUs are not hardcoded: the skill queries the live catalog and your subscription quota, so only deployable options show up.

You need an Azure subscription with the Cognitive Services Contributor or Owner role, an authenticated Azure CLI, and a Microsoft Foundry project resource ID in ARM format. If quota data cannot be fetched, deployment stops — the skill will not guess a capacity value. When the current region has no room, it searches other regions and lets you pick one. For a quick rollout to the best region, use the separate `preset` skill.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill customize -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/customize/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/customize/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/customize/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/customize/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills customize
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/customize/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/microsoft-foundry/models/deploy-model/customize
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/customize/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/microsoft-foundry/models/deploy-model/customize/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- deploy a specific model version instead of the latest
- pick between GlobalStandard, Standard and ProvisionedManaged SKUs
- set an exact capacity value within available quota
- configure content filtering through an RAI policy
- turn on dynamic quota or spillover for a deployment

## Example prompts
- Deploy an Azure OpenAI model with manual configuration — I'll pick the version and SKU
- Set up a deployment with the ProvisionedManaged SKU and a custom RAI policy
- List the available model versions and regional quotas before deploying

# Customize Model Deployment

Interactive guided workflow for deploying Azure OpenAI models with full customization control over version, SKU, capacity, content filtering, and advanced options.

## Quick Reference

| Property | Description |
|----------|-------------|
| **Flow** | Interactive step-by-step guided deployment |
| **Customization** | Version, SKU, Capacity, RAI Policy, Advanced Options |
| **SKU Support** | GlobalStandard, Standard, ProvisionedManaged, DataZoneStandard |
| **Best For** | Precise control over deployment configuration |
| **Authentication** | Azure CLI (`az login`) |
| **Tools** | Azure CLI, MCP tools (optional) |

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need **precise control** over deployment configuration:

- ✅ **Choose specific model version** (not just latest)
- ✅ **Select deployment SKU** (GlobalStandard vs Standard vs PTU)
- ✅ **Set exact capacity** within available range
- ✅ **Configure content filtering** (RAI policy selection)
- ✅ **Enable advanced features** (dynamic quota, priority processing, spillover)
- ✅ **PTU deployments** (Provisioned Throughput Units)

**Alternative:** Use `preset` for quick deployment to the best available region with automatic configuration.

### Comparison: customize vs preset

| Feature | customize | preset |
|---------|---------------------|----------------------------|
| **Focus** | Full customization control | Optimal region selection |
| **Version Selection** | User chooses from available | Uses latest automatically |
| **SKU Selection** | User chooses (GlobalStandard/Standard/PTU) | GlobalStandard only |
| **Capacity** | User specifies exact value | Auto-calculated (50% of available) |
| **RAI Policy** | User selects from options | Default policy only |
| **Region** | Current region first, falls back to all regions if no capacity | Checks capacity across all regions upfront |
| **Use Case** | Precise deployment requirements | Quick deployment to best region |

## Prerequisites

- Azure subscription with Cognitive Services Contributor or Owner role
