Explores problem spaces and architectural trade-offs without touching application code or writing specs. Great for rubber-ducking tricky logic before building.

## What it does

This skill steps in when you need to think through a thorny problem instead of writing code right away. It identifies unstated assumptions, checks constraints, and estimates the blast radius of possible modifications. The tool never touches your codebase, crafts specifications, or opens pull requests.

Two operational modes govern its behavior. In user-facing mode, it stays in an open-ended dialogue, tracking thoughts in an `Ideas / Decisions / Info` ledger and handing off conclusions via `/wheypoint`. In internal mode, other skills like `/cheese` invoke it silently to classify tasks or clarify ambiguous inputs before taking action.

If your setup lacks the `hallouminate` plugin, design research drops down to a speculative confidence level. Code generation and bug fixing belong to companion skills such as `/cook` and `/pasteurize`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill culture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/culture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/culture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill culture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/culture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill culture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/culture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install paulnsorensen/easy-cheese culture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/culture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill culture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --path skills/culture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/culture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill culture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/paulnsorensen/easy-cheese/tree/HEAD/skills/culture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- investigate interconnected bugs before touching project files
- map technical trade-offs and blast radius for architecture options
- rubber-duck system design ideas without generating boilerplate code
- log architectural assumptions and decisions into a persistent ledger

## Example prompts
- /culture these bugs feel connected, let's explore why
- /culture rubber-duck this architecture change, no writes
- /culture I want to understand our cache invalidation before fixing it

# /culture

Two modes; the invocation context, not a user flag, selects the mode:

1. **Internal mode (default).** Other workflow skills — and `/cheese` itself — invoke `/culture` silently as a thinking pass: restate the question, list assumptions, name candidate options, run a quick shape check, pick the next action. The dialogue does not surface to the user; only the resulting decision (carrying its record ledger) and any code edits the calling skill makes do. The most common callers are:
   - `/cheese` step 1 — silent classification reasoning before announce.
   - `/cheese` **tier-2 escalation** (see `skills/cheese/SKILL.md` § Escalation) — fills missing context when the cook-fast-path clarity check fails on the raw input; the synthesis lands in the mini-spec's `## Provenance` section.
   - Other workflow skills' own pre-dispatch reasoning passes (mold, cook taste-test, etc.).
2. **User-facing mode.** The user wants to think, not build: no production code, no spec, no PR. This is culture's sustained domain-modeling mode — investigate as deeply as the question needs, hold it open across turns and sessions rather than forcing convergence, record ideas, decisions, and info as they settle (`## Record ledger`), and end by writing a durable `/wheypoint` so the modeling resumes later. Reach this mode when the user said "no writes" / "rubber-duck this" / "just talk", asked to think through a problem ("these bugs feel connected", "I want to understand before fixing"), or routed a thinking-and-modeling task here.

Do not use the user-facing mode when the user wants a written spec (`/mold`), implementation (`/cook`), a bug diagnosis or fix (`/pasteurize`), review (`/age`), or external evidence gathering (`/briesearch`) — those targets get the internal-mode call instead, and the calling skill does the work.

## Conversational navigation (prototype)

Inside a user-facing session, the user steers problem levels by ordinary conversation; this is navigation, not a separate entry path.
Altitude navigation supplements the Flow below.
Suggest a useful change of altitude when evidence indicates a pattern or a gap between behavior and goals.
State the interpretation and stay within the agreed evidence scope.
A suggestion does not authorize a broad audit or downstream transition.
Read [Problem altitudes](references/problem-altitudes.md) when moving between levels, testing shared causes, or drawing relationships.
Keep silent internal reasoning unchanged; it does not load the reference or start a user interview.
Culture still owns the record ledger and session-end handoff.
