# css-native

A skill that tells your coding agent when plain CSS is enough for animations and visual effects, and when to reach for a library.

## What it does

The skill opens with a decision table. Fewer than three animations on a page, scroll-driven reveals, enter and exit from `display: none`, tooltip positioning, page transitions — all of that stays in CSS. For a multi-step timeline with five or more tweens the author points to GSAP; for interruptible springs, Framer Motion.

Then come the snippets: `animation-timeline: scroll()` and `view()` with `animation-range`, the View Transitions API for both SPA and MPA, `@starting-style` paired with `transition-behavior: allow-discrete`, anchor positioning for popovers, container queries. Separate sections cover `clip-path`, `backdrop-filter`, `mix-blend-mode` and mesh gradients.

It is marked version-sensitive. API names and browser support were checked against primary sources on 2026-09-08, and that date lives in `_jutsu/VERSIONS.md`. If it has gone stale, re-verify any version number before you act on it. Scroll-driven work should always sit inside `@supports (animation-timeline: scroll())` with content visible by default, because there is no Firefox release support.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill css-native -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/css-native/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/css-native/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill css-native -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/css-native/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill css-native -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/css-native/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AThevon/genjutsu css-native
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/css-native/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill css-native -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu --path skills/_jutsu/css-native
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/css-native/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill css-native -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu/tree/HEAD/skills/_jutsu/css-native/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a scroll-linked progress bar without JS
- animate a dialog entering from `display: none`
- decide between native CSS and an animation library
- anchor a tooltip to its trigger element
- add page transitions to a multi-page site

## Example prompts
- Build a progress bar with `animation-timeline: scroll(root block)`, no libraries
- Show me a dialog that animates in from `display: none` using `@starting-style`
- When is CSS enough for a staggered list, and when should I use GSAP?

# CSS Native - Zero-Dependency Animations & Visual Techniques

## When to Use CSS Native vs Library

| Situation | Decision |
|---|---|
| < 3 animations on the page | CSS native |
| Scroll-driven reveal/parallax | CSS native (`animation-timeline`), always inside `@supports (animation-timeline: scroll())` with the content visible by default - no Firefox release support |
| Enter/exit from `display: none` | CSS native (`@starting-style` + `transition-behavior: allow-discrete`) |
| Tooltip/popover positioning | CSS native (anchor positioning) |
| Page transitions (MPA or SPA) | CSS native (View Transitions API) |
| Complex multi-step timeline (5+ tweens) | GSAP |
| Stagger across dynamic list (unknown count) | CSS native (`animation-delay: calc(sibling-index() * 60ms)`), Baseline since Aug 2026. Reach for a library only if the stagger has to be interrupted or re-sequenced at runtime |
| Physics-based spring with interruption | Framer Motion |
| Morph between SVG shapes | GSAP MorphSVG |

Rule of thumb: if you can express it in a `@keyframes` + one `animation-timeline`, stay in CSS. The moment you need imperative control, sequence coordination, or runtime values - reach for a library.

## Scroll-Driven Animations

### Scroll Progress Timeline

Animate based on scroll position of a container.

```css
.progress-bar {
  animation: grow-width linear both;
  animation-timeline: scroll(root block);
}
@keyframes grow-width {
  from { transform: scaleX(0); }
  to   { transform: scaleX(1); }
}
```

- `scroll(<scroller> <axis>)` - scroller: `nearest` | `root` | `self`, axis: `block` | `inline` | `x` | `y`
- Default: `scroll(nearest block)`

### View Progress Timeline

Animate as an element enters/exits the scrollport.

```css
.reveal {
  animation: fade-in linear both;
  animation-timeline: view();
  animation-range: entry 0% entry 100%;
}
@keyframes fade-in {
  from { opacity: 0; transform: translateY(2rem); }
  to   { opacity: 1; transform: translateY(0); }
}
```

### animation-range

Controls which segment of the timeline drives the animation.

```css
/* Named ranges: cover | contain | entry | exit | entry-crossing | exit-crossing */
animation-range: entry 0% entry 100%;    /* animate during entry only */
animation-range: contain 0% contain 100%; /* animate while fully visible */
