# csharp-refactoring

A skill that refactors C#/.NET code without changing behavior: it classifies the request first, edits by bindings, then confirms the result with a build and tests.

## What it does

The skill splits requests in two. Rename, move, extract, inline, deduplicate or modernize — that is structural work, and it gets done. A NuGet or framework version bump, a new feature, or a threshold change dressed up as a refactor is not, and the skill answers with a short stop message naming the right workflow instead, such as `dotnet-upgrade` for package upgrades.

Renames go through bindings, not text. Every binding reference is found first, then the edit is made semantically: an IDE/Roslyn refactoring, then the C# LSP declared by the `dotnet` plugin (`findReferences`, `goToDefinition`, `rename`), then analyzer code fixes. Plain find and replace is allowed only when the scope is provably tiny and every hit is verified. All `partial` declarations are included, and the generator input is edited rather than the `*.g.cs` output.

Work stays inside the current workspace. In a Git checkout the root comes from `git rev-parse --show-toplevel`, and search never leaves it; Git itself is not required. The source text is truncated, so I cannot speak to the sections beyond what is shown. Installing needs Node.js with `npx`, since the command pulls the skill straight from the `dotnet/skills` repository.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill csharp-refactoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/csharp-refactoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/csharp-refactoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill csharp-refactoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/csharp-refactoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill csharp-refactoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/csharp-refactoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills csharp-refactoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/csharp-refactoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill csharp-refactoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet/skills/csharp-refactoring
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/csharp-refactoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill csharp-refactoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- rename a method without touching strings or comments that share the word
- pull duplicated logic out of several classes into one place
- replace an internal pass-through wrapper with a direct call
- separate a structural edit from a behavior change in one request
- update a member name that is reached through reflection or config

## Example prompts
- rename `OrderService.Calculate` to `ComputeTotal`, keep behavior unchanged
- extract the duplicated code from `InvoiceBuilder` and `ReportBuilder` into a shared method
- inline the internal `LegacyHelper` wrapper and point all callers at the target method

# C# Refactoring (behavior-preserving)

A refactor changes **structure**, never observable **behavior**. Do the edit with binding-aware tools,
then confirm behavior held with a build + the relevant tests. Keep the effort proportional to the change:
a one-line local rename does not need the ceremony a public multi-targeted change does.

## Mandatory gate: classify before validation or editing

Read only enough repository context to classify **each requested operation**. Do this before restoring,
building, or making an edit. Classification precedence is:

- If the request explicitly asks for at least one separable behavior-preserving operation, complete
  that structural work and defer only the behavior-changing or contract-changing operations. Do not
  invent or infer structural work to avoid the stop response.
- If the structural and behavior-changing parts cannot be separated, use the whole-request stop
  response and state why they are inseparable.
- Otherwise, use the whole-request stop response only when **every** requested operation is outside
  behavior-preserving refactoring.

For a whole request that is outside behavior-preserving refactoring:

1. State: `Not a behavior-preserving refactor: <specific reason>.`
2. State: `No files changed.`
3. State: `Next workflow: <workflow>.` Then stop. Do not add manual implementation steps, alternatives,
   an offer to proceed without the workflow, or a follow-up question — even when that workflow is unavailable.

| Requested as a "refactor" | Classification and action |
