# crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint

Puts an app-owned HTTP endpoint on a Crontap schedule and tracks completion with a heartbeat. Useful when your agent runtime already exists but has no clock of its own.

## What it does

The skill lays out an architecture where Crontap fires an HTTP request at a protected endpoint in your deployed app, the app drops the job into its own queue, and a worker runs it and pings a heartbeat once the work is durably done. Crontap does not wake agents, IDE sessions, chats or MCP clients. If you want a recurring prompt inside Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, use that client's own automation instead.

Five steps make up the workflow. Create a heartbeat whose period and grace match the expected run time, store its secret URL in the worker's secret manager, make the worker ping only after durable success and call `/fail` on terminal failure, schedule the enqueue endpoint, then check the evidence from all three stages. The tools involved are `create_schedule`, `create_heartbeat` and `get_heartbeat_pings`.

Before anything runs, you pick an access path: connect the Crontap MCP server at `https://mcp.crontap.com/mcp`, or set `$CRONTAP_CLIENT_ID` and `$CRONTAP_API_KEY` for the raw API. Only the second one is tied to the Ultra tier; MCP works on every tier. The skill stops until you choose. Your endpoint has to authenticate before reading the body, answer 2xx only once the queue has accepted the job, and keep model provider credentials inside the worker environment.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Crontap/skills --skill crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Crontap/skills --skill crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Crontap/skills --skill crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Crontap/skills crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Crontap/skills --skill crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Crontap/skills --path skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Crontap/skills --skill crontap-recurring-agent-endpoint -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- run a recurring agent workflow off an external clock
- notice when a scheduled run never finished
- guard the enqueue endpoint with a dedicated cron secret
- avoid duplicate queue records when a worker retries
- tell a successful enqueue apart from a completed run

## Example prompts
- Set up a daily heartbeat with a one-hour grace and a schedule that POSTs to our enqueue endpoint every day at 07:00
- Show the heartbeat pings for 2026-09-14
- Check that the worker pings only after durable completion and calls `/fail` on terminal failure

# Schedule an app-owned agent endpoint

Use this architecture only when the user controls a deployed HTTP service that
starts the workflow. Crontap schedules the HTTP request and monitors check-ins.
It does not wake agents, IDE sessions, chats, or MCP clients.

For a recurring prompt inside Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, or another
client, use that client's native automation feature. MCP clients initiate tool
calls; an MCP server does not initiate contact with them.

## Architecture

```text
Crontap clock -> protected app endpoint -> app-owned queue -> agent worker
                                                     |
                                                     +-> heartbeat on completion
```

## Prerequisites

Before using the required tools, check whether they are available. If any are
missing, stop and offer the user exactly two choices:

1. Connect Crontap MCP at `https://mcp.crontap.com/mcp`. MCP access works on
   every Crontap tier.
2. Configure `$CRONTAP_CLIENT_ID` and `$CRONTAP_API_KEY` for the raw API. Raw
   API access requires Ultra.

Do not silently choose a path or continue until the user selects one.

- A deployed application endpoint and durable worker already exist.
- The endpoint authenticates a dedicated cron secret.
- Enqueueing and downstream effects are idempotent by logical run period.
- The worker can securely read a heartbeat URL.
