## What it does

This skill lays out how client segmentation and the client lifecycle work at an advisory firm. It covers three segmentation models: by assets under management, by revenue the household generates, and by a mix of factors — relationship size, growth potential, referral activity, depth of services engaged. Behavioral segmentation by engagement level gets its own treatment, since that is what surfaces retention risk.

Then household management. The skill explains how to group related people, accounts and entities into one relationship view: spouses, children, trusts, business entities, family foundations. Every account from the portfolio system or custodian has to be linked to a household, otherwise household-level AUM aggregation, fee tier determination and consolidated reporting fall apart. There is a section on multi-generational linking and on assigning primary and secondary advisors.

A separate block covers data hygiene: orphaned accounts with no household, duplicate records for the same family, stale contact details, beneficiary mismatches between the CRM and the custodian. The skill recommends quarterly data quality audits. One caveat: the skill text is truncated, so service tier frameworks and retention analytics get less coverage here than in the full version.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill crm-client-lifecycle -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill crm-client-lifecycle -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill crm-client-lifecycle -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JoelLewis/finance_skills crm-client-lifecycle
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill crm-client-lifecycle -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills --path plugins/advisory-practice/skills/crm-client-lifecycle
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill crm-client-lifecycle -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/advisory-practice/skills/crm-client-lifecycle/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- sort the client base into service tiers
- link accounts across custodians to one household
- spot clients drifting toward the exit
- map relationships across generations of a family
- clean up duplicate and stale CRM records

## Example prompts
- Build an AUM and revenue segmentation model for our advisory firm
- Help me link a husband's and wife's accounts into one household and check the AUM rollup
- What signals tell me a client is at retention risk?

# CRM & Client Lifecycle

## Core Concepts

### Client Segmentation Models
Client segmentation assigns every household to a category that determines the level of service, contact frequency, review cadence, and resource allocation the firm provides. Without systematic segmentation, advisors default to reactive service — responding to whoever calls — rather than proactive, tiered engagement that matches effort to relationship value.

**AUM-based segmentation** is the most common starting point. A typical three-tier model:

| Tier | Household AUM | Typical Label |
|------|--------------|---------------|
| A | $2,000,000+ | Platinum |
| B | $500,000 - $1,999,999 | Gold |
| C | Under $500,000 | Silver |

AUM-based segmentation is simple to implement because AUM data is readily available from the custodian or portfolio management system. However, AUM alone is an incomplete measure of relationship value.

**Revenue-based segmentation** uses total annual fees generated by the household rather than asset levels. This captures value more accurately when fee schedules vary across clients, when some households pay financial planning fees in addition to AUM fees, or when clients have complex billing arrangements. Revenue data comes from the billing system and should be annualized to smooth quarterly fluctuations.

**Multi-factor segmentation** combines quantitative and qualitative dimensions for a more complete picture:

- Assets under management (current relationship size)
- Revenue generated (actual economic value to the firm)
```
