## What it does

The skill walks through prepaid billing for tokens, API calls, compute or a currency balance. A credit pool is created with `client.creditEntitlements.create(...)`, and every issuance is a grant — from a subscription, a one-time product, a promo, or a rollover. Usage draws the balance down, and each transaction lands in the ledger with `balance_before` and `balance_after`.

Inside you get a table for picking the billing model, the confirmed create options for a credit entitlement, and a TypeScript SDK setup example. Unit precision runs from `0` to `10` and is immutable after creation, so pick it before issuing grants. Credit amounts travel as decimal strings, never through binary floating-point. A product can carry up to five credit entitlements.

Keep the API key server-side: the SDK reads `DODO_PAYMENTS_API_KEY`, and you should set the environment explicitly — omit `environment` and the client goes to `live_mode`. Use `test_mode` while developing. If you want to charge each measured unit directly in money with no prepaid pool, that is a different model, and the skill points you to `usage-based-billing`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dodopayments/skills --skill credit-based-billing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/credit-based-billing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/credit-based-billing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dodopayments/skills --skill credit-based-billing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/credit-based-billing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dodopayments/skills --skill credit-based-billing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/credit-based-billing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dodopayments/skills credit-based-billing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/credit-based-billing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dodopayments/skills --skill credit-based-billing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dodopayments/skills --path dodo-payments/credit-based-billing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/credit-based-billing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dodopayments/skills --skill credit-based-billing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- include a recurring credit allowance in a subscription
- sell one-time top-up packs
- deduct credits for AI tokens or API calls via meters
- grant promo credits and record a reason
- configure rollover, expiry and low-balance alerts

## Example prompts
- create a token credit entitlement with precision 0 and 30-day expiry
- show the customer's credit balance and ledger entries
- set up overage with invoicing at the end of the billing period

# Dodo Payments Credit-Based Billing

Use this skill to build prepaid or included-credit billing for tokens, API calls, compute, storage, or currency-denominated value, with auditable grants and deductions.

## When to use this skill

- Include a recurring credit allowance in a subscription.
- Sell one-time top-up packs or prepaid usage.
- Deduct credits from metered AI, API, or compute consumption.
- Grant promotional or support credits and record a reason.
- Configure expiry, rollover, low-balance alerts, or overage.
- Reconcile a customer's balance against an immutable ledger trail.

## Choose the billing model

| Requirement | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A fixed product with no tracked consumption | Plain subscription or one-time payment | No balance or usage pipeline is needed. |
| Bill each measured unit directly in money | Pure usage-based billing | A meter rates usage with `price_per_unit`; no prepaid pool is needed. |
| Include or pre-sell a consumable allowance | Credit-based billing | Grants create a balance that usage can consume. |
| Include credits, then charge beyond the allowance | Credits with overage | The credit pool is consumed first; configured overage handles the deficit. |
| Combine a base fee, included credits, and metered use | Usage-based product linked to a credit entitlement | The meter converts usage units into credit deductions. |

Credit-based and usage-based billing are complementary. Define and test meters with the `usage-based-billing` skill; this skill covers the credit side and the meter-to-credit link.

## Core concepts

### Credit entitlements and grants

A **credit entitlement** is the reusable definition of a credit unit and its lifecycle: name, unit, precision, expiry, rollover, and overage. A **grant** is an issuance of that credit to one customer. Grants can originate from:

- a subscription, reissued each billing cycle;
- a one-time product or add-on;
- a direct API ledger credit;
- rollover from an earlier grant.

Credits gate **how much** a customer can consume. The separate `entitlements` resource gates fulfillment such as feature access, files, or license delivery. Do not confuse these SDK namespaces:
