## What it does

The skill takes eight frameworks from cognitive science and points them at research ideation. Among them: combinatorial creativity (Koestler's bisociation), problem reformulation, and analogical reasoning via structure-mapping. Each framework targets a different cognitive move — combining, reformulating, analogizing, constraining, inverting, abstracting, exploring boundaries, holding contradictions.

What's inside is procedure, not encouragement. Bisociation comes as a step-by-step workflow: pick two domains, list their core primitives, build a cross-product matrix, then walk the cells asking what it means to apply one domain's concept to the other's problem. Reformulation ships as a table of shifts — change the objective, the formalism, the granularity, the agent, the timescale, the direction. Self-check lists follow: is the link structural or just verbal, does the combination yield testable predictions.

The author is explicit about when to skip it. For project-level brainstorming there's `brainstorming-research-ideas`; for a literature survey, `scientific-skills:literature-review`; for execution on a defined problem, domain-specific skills. Paired with `brainstorm`, this one generates the raw insight and the other structures and filters it. No dependencies, MIT licensed.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill creative-thinking-for-research -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill creative-thinking-for-research -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill creative-thinking-for-research -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs creative-thinking-for-research
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill creative-thinking-for-research -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 21-research-ideation/creative-thinking-for-research
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/creative-thinking-for-research/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill creative-thinking-for-research -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- generate a genuinely novel direction instead of extending prior work
- break out of a local optimum inside one subfield
- connect two distant fields structurally rather than by surface metaphor
- re-represent a hard problem so it becomes tractable
- prepare for a research retreat or PhD-level ideation session

## Example prompts
- run my LLM inference problem through bisociation: pick two domains and build the cross-product matrix
- reformulate my problem statement — what hidden assumptions does it carry, and what changes if I switch the formalism
- check whether my analogy between immune memory and fault tolerance is structural or just metaphorical

# Creative Thinking for Research

Eight empirically grounded frameworks from cognitive science, applied to computer science and AI research. Unlike ad-hoc brainstorming, each framework here is backed by decades of creativity research — from Koestler's bisociation to Kauffman's adjacent possible. They target distinct cognitive operations: combining, reformulating, analogizing, constraining, inverting, abstracting, exploring boundaries, and holding contradictions.

## When to Use This Skill

- Generating genuinely novel ideas, not incremental extensions of prior work
- Feeling trapped in a local optimum of thinking within a single subfield
- Wanting to systematically apply creativity heuristics rather than waiting for inspiration
- Preparing for a research retreat or PhD-level ideation session
- Bridging between fields and seeking structural (not superficial) connections

**Do NOT use this skill when**:
- You need structured project-level brainstorming workflows (use `brainstorming-research-ideas`)
- You have a well-defined problem and need execution help (use domain-specific skills)
- You need a literature survey (use `scientific-skills:literature-review`)
```
