## What it does

The skill covers two plugin formats in EmDash. A sandboxed plugin lives in `src/plugin.ts` and default-exports a `SandboxedPlugin`, with admin screens built from Block Kit pages and widgets. The native route uses `definePlugin()` or `createPlugin()` and unlocks React, Astro components and raw page fragments, but it runs with the site's authority and cannot be installed from the registry.

Scaffolding starts with `pnpm dlx @emdash-cms/plugin-cli init my-plugin`, then `pnpm install` and `pnpm run test`. The `emdash-plugin.jsonc` manifest is the trust contract: every capability such as `content:write` or `network:request` is declared up front, and adding authority, exposing a public route or shipping MCP tools needs fresh administrator approval. Settings, KV, declared storage and logging stay plugin-scoped and ask for nothing.

Sandboxed runtime code gets Web APIs but not Node.js built-ins, which is where people trip when they reach for `fs` out of habit. Routes are private by default and need authentication plus the declared permission; public ones face the internet and require explicit install consent. Authoring types come in with `import type` from `emdash/plugin`, and value imports are limited to lightweight helpers like `pluginRoute()` and `pluginResponse()`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emdash-cms/skills --skill creating-plugins -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/creating-plugins/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emdash-cms/skills --skill creating-plugins -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emdash-cms/skills --skill creating-plugins -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install emdash-cms/skills creating-plugins
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emdash-cms/skills --skill creating-plugins -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/emdash-cms/skills --path skills/creating-plugins
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add emdash-cms/skills --skill creating-plugins -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/emdash-cms/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/creating-plugins/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold an EmDash plugin from the CLI
- declare only the capabilities a plugin actually needs
- hook into content save events
- expose an MCP tool over a private JSON route
- pick between sandboxed and native plugin formats

## Example prompts
- Scaffold an EmDash plugin with plugin-cli and add a content:afterSave hook
- Declare media read and email send capabilities in emdash-plugin.jsonc
- Build an MCP tool over a private route with a Zod input schema

# Creating EmDash plugins

Build against the API that reaches the intended execution mode. Source types and production-boundary tests take precedence over examples in this skill when they disagree.

## Choose a format

| Format    | Runtime source                                      | Admin UI                                                  | Distribution                 |
| --------- | --------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Sandboxed | `src/plugin.ts` default-exports a `SandboxedPlugin` | Block Kit pages, widgets, saved-entry panels, and actions | Plugin CLI and registry      |
| Native    | `definePlugin()` / `createPlugin()`                 | React, Block Kit, and Astro components                    | Trusted site dependency only |

Use a sandboxed plugin unless the feature needs host-process access, React admin code, Astro rendering components, raw page fragments, or custom Portable Text block definitions. Native plugins run with the site's authority and cannot be installed from the registry.

## Scaffold a sandboxed plugin

```sh
pnpm dlx @emdash-cms/plugin-cli init my-plugin
cd my-plugin
pnpm install
pnpm run test
```

The manifest is the identity and trust contract. Runtime hooks and routes live in `src/plugin.ts`; the CLI generates descriptors, manifests, and bundles. Do not create a separate descriptor factory or `sandbox-entry.ts`.

```typescript title="src/plugin.ts"
import type { SandboxedPlugin } from "emdash/plugin";
const plugin: SandboxedPlugin = {
	hooks: {
		"content:afterSave": async (event, ctx) => {
			ctx.log.info("Content saved", { id: event.content.id });
		},
	},
};
export default plugin;
```

Import authoring types from `emdash/plugin` with `import type`. Value imports are limited to lightweight helpers such as `pluginRoute()` and `pluginResponse()`, which the CLI bundles. Sandboxed runtime code can use Web APIs but not Node.js built-ins.

## Declare access

Declare every host API in `emdash-plugin.jsonc`. Adding authority, exposing a route publicly, or adding MCP tools requires renewed administrator approval.
