## What it does

The skill covers one job: you ask the agent for a new VoltAgent project and it offers three routes. Automatic, where it runs `npm create voltagent-app@latest` and handles the prompts. Interactive, where it goes step by step and confirms each choice. Manual, where it installs dependencies and builds a working example.

The CLI flow is spelled out too. It asks for a project name, a server framework (Hono or Elysia), a model provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, Mistral, Ollama), then an API key. It installs dependencies, writes `.env`, `README.md`, `tsconfig.json`, `tsdown.config.ts` and Docker files, and initializes git. The manual path lists the directory layout, the packages `@voltagent/core` plus `@voltagent/server-hono` or `@voltagent/server-elysia`, the `package.json` scripts, TypeScript and tsdown configs, a `weather.ts` tool and an expense approval workflow.

You need Node.js 20+ (`>= 20.19.0` is recommended) and an API key for your provider. Ollama skips the key, but you still pull a model with `ollama pull llama3.2`. One snag: with pnpm, yarn or bun the `--example` flag sometimes needs a `--` in front, so copying the command verbatim can fail.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add VoltAgent/skills --skill create-voltagent -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/create-voltagent/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add VoltAgent/skills --skill create-voltagent -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add VoltAgent/skills --skill create-voltagent -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install VoltAgent/skills create-voltagent
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add VoltAgent/skills --skill create-voltagent -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/VoltAgent/skills --path skills/create-voltagent
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add VoltAgent/skills --skill create-voltagent -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/VoltAgent/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/create-voltagent/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new VoltAgent project from scratch
- pick a server framework and model provider at setup
- build the manual install without the CLI
- add a first tool and workflow to the project
- run on Ollama instead of a cloud provider

## Example prompts
- Create a new VoltAgent project with the CLI
- Show me the manual VoltAgent setup with a tool and a workflow
- Scaffold a VoltAgent project on Hono with the Anthropic provider

# Create VoltAgent Skill

Complete guide for creating new VoltAgent projects. Includes the CLI flow and a full manual setup.

Official documentation: https://voltagent.dev/docs/

---

## Start Here

When a user wants to create a VoltAgent project, ask:

"How would you like to create your VoltAgent project?"

1. Automatic Setup - run `npm create voltagent-app@latest` and handle prompts
2. Interactive Guide - walk through each step and confirm choices
3. Manual Installation - set up dependencies and a full working example

Based on their choice:
- Option 1: run the CLI, capture server and provider choices, and finish setup
- Option 2: gather server, provider, and API key, then run the CLI
- Option 3: follow the manual steps below

---

## Before You Start

- Node.js 20+ (>= 20.19.0 recommended)
- Git (optional, for auto git init)
- An API key for your model provider (not needed for Ollama)

---

## Fast Path

Create a new VoltAgent project with one command:

```bash
npm create voltagent-app@latest
```

Other package managers:

```bash
pnpm create voltagent-app@latest
yarn create voltagent-app@latest
bun create voltagent-app@latest
```

---

## CLI Flow

The create-voltagent-app command:
1. Asks for a project name (default: `my-voltagent-app`)
2. Prompts for a server framework (Hono or Elysia)
3. Prompts for an AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, Mistral, Ollama)
4. Prompts for an API key when required
5. Installs dependencies and scaffolds the project
6. Writes `.env`, `README.md`, `tsconfig.json`, `tsdown.config.ts`, and Docker files
7. Initializes a git repo when available

---

## CLI Walkthrough

1. Run:
   ```bash
   npm create voltagent-app@latest
   ```

2. When prompted:
   - Choose a server (Hono recommended or Elysia)
   - Choose an AI provider
   - Enter your API key (skip if using Ollama)

3. Start the dev server:
   ```bash
   cd <your-project-directory>
   npm run dev
   ```

4. If you chose Ollama:
   ```bash
   ollama pull llama3.2
   ```

---

## CLI Flags and Examples

Create in a specific directory:

```bash
npm create voltagent-app@latest my-voltagent-app
```

Download an example from the VoltAgent repo:

```bash
npm create voltagent-app@latest -- --example with-workflow
```

pnpm / yarn / bun equivalents:

```bash
pnpm create voltagent-app@latest -- --example with-workflow
