# create-stories

Breaks a single epic into implementable stories with acceptance criteria. Useful when design is done and build work starts.

## What it does

The skill takes one epic and slices it into stories, each one an implementable behaviour. Size comes from `story_granularity`: `coarse` puts 5-10 acceptance criteria in a story, `balanced` 2-4, `fine` just one. Prose depth (context, implementation notes, ADR summary) follows `docs.density`, but the criteria and the trace to a requirement are never trimmed.

It runs in phases: find the epic, pull GDD sections, the layer rules from the control manifest, TR registry entries for the system, and ADR statuses. Then it drafts stories, has a QA lead review them, and writes `production/epics/[epic-slug]/story-NNN-[slug].md` plus the Stories table in `EPIC.md` and the row in `production/epics/index.md`. Run it once per epic in dependency order: Foundation first, then Core, Feature, Presentation.

At the `minimal` workflow tier an epic file may not exist at all — the skill then builds one from `design/game-brief.md`, one story per MVP feature. No brief means it stops and points you at `/brainstorm`. At `standard` and `full`, a missing `EPIC.md` under the named slug stops it too, with `/create-epics` as the fix. It will not decompose from a guess.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-stories -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/create-stories/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-stories -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-stories -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios create-stories
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-stories -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --path .claude/skills/create-stories
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-stories -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/create-stories/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split an epic into stories with acceptance criteria
- turn an MVP feature list into build-order stories
- trace each story to a requirement and its ADR
- check ADR statuses before decomposing
- add stories to an existing epic without rewriting old ones

## Example prompts
- Break the combat epic into stories
- Create stories for the loot epic, review lean
- Build stories from the brief for mvp

Resolved above — use as-is; `--review` overrides `review_mode`. No block →

Ask with the question tool. Without one, list the options numbered and end your turn

# Create Stories

A story is one implementable behaviour: small enough for the size
`story_granularity` sets, self-contained, and traced to a requirement and the
decision that governs it. Run this skill once per epic, in dependency order:
Foundation epics first, then Core, Feature, Presentation.

**Writes:** `production/epics/[epic-slug]/story-NNN-[slug].md`, the epic's
`EPIC.md` Stories table, and its row in `production/epics/index.md`.
**Next:** `/dev-story [story-path]` at `workflow: minimal`; otherwise
`/story-readiness [story-path]`, then `/dev-story`.

Asks follow `.claude/docs/automation-modes.md` (collaborative always asks, guided
asks on major choices, autonomous logs and goes on; `automation_always_ask`
categories always ask).

Checklist (copy it and tick as you go):

```
- [ ] Phase 1: epic found, tier resolved
- [ ] Phase 2: inputs loaded, each ADR's status reported
- [ ] Phase 3-4: stories drafted, typed, Ready or Blocked
- [ ] Phase 5: QA lead review run, or its skip noted
- [ ] Phase 6: story list shown, one ask to write
- [ ] Phase 7: stories, EPIC.md and index.md written (or index absence said)
- [ ] Phase 8: next step asked, closing block printed
```

## Phase 1: Epic and settings

**Tier.** `workflow` for the epic's system: the `system_overrides` row for the epic
slug (its GDD system) if there is one, else the project value.

**`story_granularity`** sets each story's acceptance-criteria load. Group or split
