## What it does

The skill spells out how an MCP App is put together: a tool the model calls, plus an HTML resource the host renders next to the result. The two are linked through `_meta.ui.resourceUri` on the tool. Host calls the tool, server returns data, the view draws it. Skip one half and nothing shows up.

Inside sit templates for React (with the `useApp` hook), vanilla JS, Vue, Svelte, Preact and Solid, plus the SDK sources where JSDoc covers the `App` class, `ontoolinput`, `ontoolresult` and `onteardown`. The agent clones `modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps` at the current version tag and reads the examples from there. A patterns file handles chunked responses and fullscreen mode.

Dependencies are where this bites. Version 2.x of `@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps` needs the split `@modelcontextprotocol/client`, `server`, `node` and `express` packages at `^2.0.0`, and the legacy `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` v1 must not be added alongside. Register every handler before `app.connect()`, otherwise the view gets nothing. The HTML is served as an MCP resource with no same-origin server, so all network requests, `localhost` included, need a CSP entry. Check `_meta.ui.csp` before the first run; without it the view stays empty.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill create-mcp-app -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/create-mcp-app/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill create-mcp-app -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill create-mcp-app -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps create-mcp-app
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill create-mcp-app -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --path plugins/mcp-apps/skills/create-mcp-app
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps --skill create-mcp-app -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps/tree/HEAD/plugins/mcp-apps/skills/create-mcp-app/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add an interactive view to an existing MCP tool
- pick a server template: React with `useApp` or vanilla JS without a build step
- swap the legacy SDK package for the split 2.x packages
- set a CSP so the HTML resource can fetch data
- stream a long response in chunks and keep the view state

## Example prompts
- Build an MCP App in React: the tool returns a list of issues, the view renders a filterable table
- Add a UI to the existing tool in `server.ts` through `_meta.ui.resourceUri`
- Explain how to set CSP for an MCP App that fetches from `localhost`

# Create MCP App

Build interactive UIs that run inside MCP-enabled hosts like Claude Desktop. An MCP App combines an MCP tool with an HTML resource to display rich, interactive content.

## Core Concept: Tool + Resource

Every MCP App requires two parts linked together:

1. **Tool** - Called by the LLM/host, returns data
2. **Resource** - Serves the bundled HTML UI that displays the data

The tool's `_meta.ui.resourceUri` references the resource's URI.

Host calls tool → Host renders resource UI → Server returns result → UI receives result.

## Quick Start Decision Tree

### Framework Selection

| Framework | SDK Support | Best For |
|-----------|-------------|----------|
| React | `useApp` hook provided | Teams familiar with React |
| Vanilla JS | Manual lifecycle | Simple apps, no build complexity |
| Vue/Svelte/Preact/Solid | Manual lifecycle | Framework preference |

### Project Context

**Adding to existing MCP server:**
- Import `registerAppTool`, `registerAppResource` from SDK
- Add tool registration with `_meta.ui.resourceUri`
- Add resource registration serving bundled HTML

**Creating new MCP server:**
- Set up server with transport (stdio or HTTP)
- Register tools and resources
- Configure build system with `vite-plugin-singlefile`

## Getting Reference Code

Clone the SDK repository for working examples and API documentation:

```bash
git clone --branch "v$(npm view @modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps version)" --depth 1 https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps.git /tmp/mcp-ext-apps
```

### Framework Templates

Learn and adapt from `/tmp/mcp-ext-apps/examples/basic-server-{framework}/`:

| Template | Key Files |
|----------|-----------|
| `basic-server-vanillajs/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.ts`, `mcp-app.html` |
| `basic-server-react/` | `server.ts`, `src/mcp-app.tsx` (uses `useApp` hook) |
| `basic-server-vue/` | `server.ts`, `src/App.vue` |
