# create-epics

Turns GDDs and architecture into epics, one per architectural module. Useful when you plan the work before writing stories.

## What it does

The skill reads your system GDDs and `docs/architecture/architecture.md`, then proposes one epic per module. Each epic states what gets built and which decisions govern it. How to build it belongs to the stories, and this skill never writes one.

Work runs in phases: scope and tier first, then the inputs are loaded and reported, then every epic is shown on its own with the question "Shall I create Epic: …?". The file `production/epics/[epic-slug]/EPIC.md` and its row in `production/epics/index.md` are written only after that separate yes. From there each epic goes to `/create-stories [epic-slug]`.

Run it per layer as development reaches that layer. Feature epics written before Core is nearly done describe a design that will have changed. At the `minimal` tier the step is optional, because `/create-stories` builds the epic from `design/game-brief.md` by itself. At `standard` and `full` the architecture file is required, and the run stops without it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-epics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/create-epics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-epics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-epics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios create-epics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-epics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --path .claude/skills/create-epics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill create-epics -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/create-epics/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- break a game into epics per architectural module
- plan the work before any stories are written
- see which requirements an Accepted ADR covers
- order epics by layer: Foundation, Core, Feature, Presentation
- keep every epic listed in one index file

## Example prompts
- Create epics for the foundation layer
- Break the combat system into epics
- Create epics for all systems with --review lean

# Create Epics

An epic is a bounded body of work for one architectural module: **what** gets built
and which decisions govern it. How to build it is for the stories. Run it once per
layer as development reaches that layer: Feature epics written before Core is
nearly done describe a design that will have changed.

**Writes:** `production/epics/[epic-slug]/EPIC.md` per epic and its row in
`production/epics/index.md`, each after its own yes.
**Next:** `/create-stories [epic-slug]` per epic. This skill never writes a story.

Asks follow `.claude/docs/automation-modes.md` (collaborative always asks, guided
asks on major choices, autonomous logs and goes on; `automation_always_ask`
categories always ask).

Checklist (copy it and tick as you go):

```
- [ ] Phase 1: scope and tier
- [ ] Phase 2: inputs loaded and reported
- [ ] Phase 3: each epic shown, "Shall I create Epic: …?" asked one at a time
- [ ] Phase 4: producer review run, or its skip noted
- [ ] Phase 5: each EPIC.md and index row written after its own yes
- [ ] Phase 6: closing block printed
```

## Phase 1: Scope and tier

The text typed after the skill name, with any `--review <mode>` pair removed:

- `all`: every system, in layer order.
- `layer: foundation` (or `core`, `feature`, `presentation`): that layer only.
- a system name: that system only.
- nothing: the request's own words when they name a layer or system ("foundation
  and core"); else ask "Which layer or system would you like epics for?"

**Tier.** The project's `workflow` value sets what is required (Phase 2). Each
