## What it does

This skill guides backend architecture on Vercel by focusing on the workload rather than the programming language. It maps application requirements to specific platform components, whether you need standard HTTP endpoints, WebSockets via Fluid compute, or durable multi-step workflows.

The skill covers Node.js, Python, and Go frameworks, alongside containerized setups using `Dockerfile.vercel`. For persistence, it guides integration with Marketplace providers like Neon, Supabase, and Upstash so credentials link automatically. Be aware that container images execute as stateless, autoscaling Functions rather than dedicated virtual machines. Background Daemons currently run only in production as a beta feature and cannot receive direct inbound HTTP traffic.

Once the architectural map is ready, the skill hands off execution to specialized skills like `vercel-functions` or `vercel-services`. This avoids confusion around execution limits, regions, and environment variable setup.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill create-a-backend -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/create-a-backend/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/create-a-backend/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill create-a-backend -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/create-a-backend/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill create-a-backend -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/create-a-backend/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install vercel/vercel-plugin create-a-backend
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/create-a-backend/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill create-a-backend -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/vercel/vercel-plugin --path skills/create-a-backend
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/create-a-backend/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add vercel/vercel-plugin --skill create-a-backend -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- map backend workloads to the right Vercel compute products
- deploy a frontend and an API together using Vercel Services
- select serverless-compatible databases through Vercel Marketplace
- choose between Queues, Workflows, and Daemons for background tasks

## Example prompts
- Help me plan a backend architecture on Vercel for a FastAPI service and background jobs
- How do I deploy a Next.js frontend with an Express API in one project using Services?
- Recommend Vercel products for handling durable multi-step tasks with retries

# Create a Backend

Help the user create a backend by choosing an architecture before reaching for implementation details. Start from the workload, not the programming language. Vercel runs complex backend applications, not just frontends.
