## What it does

The skill covers three things at once: how to author module units, how to build them, and why the build breaks. It lays out the four unit kinds — interface unit, implementation unit, partition, header unit. There is a table of common failures: `module 'math' not found`, `cannot import header in module`, `redefinition of module`, a stale BMI cache. Each row gives the cause and the fix.

Build steps are split by compiler. With Clang, `--precompile` produces a `.pcm` and consumers pick it up via `-fmodule-file=math=math.pcm`. With GCC it is `-fmodules-ts` and `.gcm` files under `gcm.cache/`. CMake 3.28 and newer uses `FILE_SET CXX_MODULES` and needs a generator that understands modules — Ninja 1.11 or MSBuild. For CMake 3.25–3.27 the skill keeps the experimental variable set.

Legacy headers get their own section. Macros do not cross a module boundary, so macro-dependent code moves into the Global Module Fragment, alongside `#include <cassert>` and wrappers like `cjson`. Worth knowing before you install: if your project sits on CMake below 3.25, there is no module support to hook into.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cpp-modules -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cpp-modules/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cpp-modules/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cpp-modules -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cpp-modules/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cpp-modules -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cpp-modules/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills cpp-modules
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cpp-modules/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cpp-modules -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/compilers/cpp-modules
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cpp-modules/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cpp-modules -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write an interface unit and export declarations from it
- split a large module into partitions without breaking ODR
- pull a macro-heavy legacy header in through the Global Module Fragment
- build a module with Clang and GCC using the right flags
- fix a build that went stale after a BMI cache change

## Example prompts
- Write a `math.cppm` interface unit that exports `add` and `pi`
- Set up the CMake build for modules with Ninja and put interface units under `FILE_SET CXX_MODULES`
- The compiler says `module 'math' not found` — work out the right build order

# C++20 Modules

## Purpose

Guide agents through authoring, building, and debugging C++20 modules: named modules vs header units, module partitions, CMake integration, compiler-specific flags, and interoperability with legacy headers.

## Triggers

- "How do I write a C++20 module?"
- "How do I import a module in CMake?"
- "What's the difference between a named module and a header unit?"
- "My module gives 'cannot find module' errors"
- "How do I use C++20 modules with Clang?"
- "How do I migrate from headers to modules?"

## Workflow

### 1. Module concepts overview

```
C++20 module kinds:
├── Named module interface unit  (.cppm / .ixx)  — exports declarations
├── Module implementation unit   (.cpp)           — defines module members
├── Module partition             (.cppm)          — internal module subdivision
└── Header unit                  (any header)     — import a legacy header as module
```

Named modules are the primary target. Header units are a bridge for legacy code. Avoid Global Module Fragment unless required for macro access.

### 2. Named module — minimal example

```cpp
// math.cppm — module interface unit
export module math;          // declares the module name
export int add(int a, int b) { return a + b; }
export double pi = 3.14159;
// Non-exported (module-private)
int internal_helper() { return 42; }
```

```cpp
// main.cpp — consumer
import math;                 // import the module
#include <iostream>          // legacy header (still works)
int main() {
    std::cout << add(2, 3) << "\n";  // 5
    std::cout << pi << "\n";
}
```

### 3. Module partitions

```cpp
// math-core.cppm — partition
export module math:core;     // partition 'core' of module 'math'
export int add(int a, int b) { return a + b; }
```

```cpp
// math.cppm — primary module interface
